Variation/wording advice

Hi guys

Looking for a bit of advice on my variation. First things first I passed my DSC1 (actually enjoyed the course) so now need to add deer and vermin to my ticket

The advice I’m after is if I ask for the wording I would want on my liscene (basically excluding the chief officer to open the ticket) what you think the chances could be ?

Had my FAC under a year however I have many photos/evidence of deer stalks and vermin control with another FAC holder that had had deers/vermin for many years.

What wording are you thinking of?
The .22LR rifle, sound moderator and ammunition may also be used for shooting vermin, ground game and any other lawful quarry, and for zeroing on ranges or land which the holder has lawful authority to shot

The .243 win rifle, sound moderator and ammunition may also be used for shooting deer, and any other lawful quarry, and for zeroing on ranges or land which the holder has lawful authority to shot

Pretty much standard, but that would be an open condition.

Looks fair enough.
Just ask.
Chances are it'll be granted.

Hopefully. I also have 3 permissions to add whilst also showing my DSC1

1 land is already cleared for .22 the other already cleared for a .243 and the 3rd was a old farm that’s been chopped up and sold separately so it might be cleared for something it might not

The word “practice” is standard within the quarry shooting conditions listed in Appendix 3 of the Guidance to Police……however some licensing authorities are “micromanaging” the condition by omitting the word practice…Sussex & Kent spring to mind. If the licensing authority does omit “practice” on your quarry condition speak to your shooting organisation

i would give the reasoning why you want an “open” condition- ie you have now passed your DSC1 and will shooting over a number of different bits of ground as well as taking let days with different guides again on different bits of ground, so pls very nicely can you grant me an open condition so I don’t need to keep pestering to add additional bits of ground every time I go stalking.

This is the way to do it but only mention let days if you have proof of them, as they may well ask!

I will include that!

Another item I have notice some peoples ticket says “fox” and some doesn’t but long as you have .22RF for vermin and “any other lawful quarry” along with .243 for Dee and “any other lawful quarry” should cover fox really on both calibre

If what you want at the end of it is an open ticket, then having more ground that is already cleared by police is largely immaterial. What they should be looking for is evidence that you have the experience and ability to my good judgement calls on wether a shot is safe to take or not. even though you may be looking to shoot deer or fox with X calibre, ANY live quarry shooting with ANY calibre is relevant and you should be evidencing that.
so the times you have been out with your friend, is he willing to give in writing that you were safe, showed good judgement in not taking a shot if there was any doubt as to the suitability, that you hit what you were aiming at, etc etc..... this could be on foxes deer rabbits etc

if all of your ground is already cleared then some forces may say there is no need for the ticket to be opened. Do you have any stalks planned eg paid for where you are unaware of ground is cleared or not, do you have ground where you do not know?

part of the reason that I got an open ticket quickly was experience over many years, prior to FAC and partly after waiting 8 months for them to still not have got round to clearing the land.

Understood this makes complete sense, iv had my FAC under a year I doubt they will open it but if I’m going to put in a variation I might as well try my luck

On the 3 pieces of land I’m adding

1. Has been cleared for a .243 (It’s in a different force I’m with MET and the area is Essex)

2. Has been cleared for a .22LR (again in Essex)

3. Not sure probably not. Used to be a farm and got divided up (comes under MET however me and the land owner have different fire arms officers he only has a SGC and shoots duck on that land)

To add with experience iv been out with my mentor for around 2 and a half years and have over 30 deers pictures with time stamps that I had shot which my mentor can vouch too

I still don’t think I can get a open ticket but again worth trying and see how it goes from there

don't think it matters who the FEO is, they change quite often or even what force area, as I believe they are now logged on a national database (but I may be wrong on it being national). Also some force have more sense now and don't use calibres but group them together such as RF only or small full bore/low MV, full bore/high MV etc. I know a friend who is an FEO had an argument as he refused to go out to look to confirm a change from 270 to 308, and just said if its good enough for 270, it is obviously good enough for 308! mind you, he shoots as well as doing that for a living
