Deer dog - breed choice!

I like the comments about Borders. I have a Border who's 12 now and just about calmed down enough to make a deer dog. She'll track anything and will never ever give up on a blood trail. She was never trained in deer work but has that typical working terrier trait of needing to kill something. Even now she can't be trusted with cats. You couldn't have taken her in her early years as she wasn't biddable enough to stay with you for any length of time and would go to ground in any hole. My next dog will be another Border but I'll make sure they get the right training early doors.

I am considering getting a border as a deer dog. Our house has been dogless two years now, our last lab was a great deer dog and happy to do whatever was asked. Lab previous to that was tremendous and often used for finding other peoples lost deer. My son has a lab that is a real handful but he is indispensable if you need to find a deer anywhere. Little brain, fearless and obsessed by deer. As in my experience they all are. I would have another but we are downsizing the dog!!

I’m training these 2 up. The collie will make a cracking indicator dog but hasn’t quite got the hang of staying put when told yet. The lab is like a bull in a china shop but shows incredible promise as a tracker.

I use a Jagd Terrier X Patterdale Terrier who stalks with me, will air scent when there's something up wind, she will also get stuck in when she needs to to bring down a deer. But also is very noisy when she cant. She's a great little animal and a pleasure to have, the only issue is she's now 8 years old. And for the first have of her life she was a maniac and bloody hard work....

Like all dogs if you put the time in would work a treat. Both of mine have had fantastic noses will air scent quite a bit before the spaniel on deer.

Used to have labs then GSP and now have GWP. All worked well and had their strengths. Labs easier to train in my opinion but wirey has been the most challenging but rewarding. My GSP was the most initiative and possibly multi purpose. Just my tuppence worth.
I’d agree with that. My soft gsp was by far the best deer dog I’ve had. Very content to just be by my side, would point deer & would sit if I raised my binoculars. My rather more independently minded gsp’s & gwp were seriously hard work to take stalking & I wouldn’t want to repeat the experience. Ever.

I have a wirehaired viszla he will grab a wounded animal too, took some time to get him to grab but would never look back with him now, great train ability with him.
Had a BMH previously but wouldn’t have another one . That’s just me.

I would have to vote on the Labs my self. In my experience I find them to best all rounder. I have my fellas hunting birds and then tracking deer on the same day. as well as
sitting under high seats or next to me at pegs. they just do it all.

How did you manage that mate. I thought the HWV were ment to be quite shy at grabbing them...genuinely interested in how you managed to convince him he could do it?!

Of all the dogs I’ve seen, used and had, it would be a lab all day long.

I don’t mind some other blood,
Pointer maybe, but lab is always my first choice.

Interestingly I used my Belgian Mali for a few years and he was superb, and I do mean he outshone anything I’ve seen, but I couldn’t recomend one to anyone who has never owned a Mali previously 🤣

A lot of people say that about the GWPs... difficult but rewarding. What do you mean by rewarding, exactly?

My labs and gsps all worked well and during this time I was mostly rough shooting. The gwp has an instinct like no other, air scent and track. I may not have another as it’s been till she was 4 ish before I could get the best from her. Labs and gsp were mature and trained ish around 18 months. Stopping the will to run in has been the most challenging. Not friendly with other dogs. We stay very rural, which suits for exercise she is out most days with me. Don’t know if it’s answered your question as everyone may have a different story. I don’t think I have the energy to train another😊

Is it right do you think what I've heard, that the GWP tend to be a combination of slow to mature, independent, sensitive and stubborn?

What do you think does the GWP add to the lab, with the GWPxLab?
A bit more drive and less soft mouth. I often work with a Guy who uses a GWPXLab. very impressed with how good a worker it is but also its nature. hes going to have a litter from her this year only reason im looking at one.

What kind of dog will he be pairing her with? Another GWPxLab?

Lab! All day long. I used to take two but just one now. See the deer before I do. I can sit him walk off round the corner fire a shot. He will still be there. Finds deer no issues. However his technician is a little to be desired.

I have 4 dogs, 2 Weimaraners and 2 porcelaine hounds. My weimaraners are trialled so I didn't want to risk upsetting that training by getting them onto tracking.
My older porcelaine hound is just a sofa surfing layabout but I've started training my younger one for tracking.
They're very easy around the house, relatively quiet for a scent hound and keen to get stuck in with their nose on the ground. They're a very old french scent hound, great around the house and with the other dogs. Worth a look at either of you want something different but as said you can't go wrong with a lab.
