Deer feeders

Hi all getting pressured on a couple of farms I lease to shoot more fallow as they are battering the pheasant hoppers daily or rather nightly!
Does anyone have plans for or pictures of deer feeders I could use to keep them in one area so I can sort the burgers out?
Not to shoot at the feeders but as they cross from cover to cover.

I sort of do the same thing but with red deer, but be prepared to dig deep for feed, ive had 1 heard of hinds and calfs do 250kg in a weekend.

Once you start feeding and shooting on the approaches to and from it’s a very very good way to get the numbers but the financial strain of feeding herd species and keeping going all the way through, really cost it’s just not worth it at the end considering that you’re not getting the money now for the carcasses now days to of set the feed costs, unless of course your getting the feed for nowt!

Then thats a different matter entirely

Bit of a quick fix is aswell as shooting more deer ,if you can get hold of IBC tanks ,take the plastic tubs out and use the cage with a couple of fence posts , I no its not a solution but every bit helps with the price of feed , birds can pass through but deer obviously can't

Don’t know if you can see detail but I’ve adapted Phessie feeders for Deer, can send you some different pics.

I manage/keeper a game shoot and manage the deer, mainly fallow and Muntjac with the odd roe, CWD and red thrown in. You sort of answered your own question….”as they are battering the pheasant hoppers daily”. Deer are like most animals in that if faced with an easy meal then they will take it. Pheasant hoppers (best ones being pan-feeders) with either wheat, maize, peas or beans will draw them in. But don’t overlook a pile of waste carrots, chopped sugar beat or apples as they also work really well.

If you want something that stands out as a specific deer feeder then give Keith at Keith’s high seats a call. He makes a long tube and pan that bolts on the bottom of a drum. I have several of those made up on 40 gallon drums with long legs bolted high on the drum so that the weight is low down and the feet are wide. This really helps with keeping them upright. One of these drums will hold 150kg of wheat/beans so don’t need filling quite as often and the pan is quite small so it stops multiple deer hitting it at the same time.

Wouldn’t bother with deer feeders, you’ll only make it an expensive turn out for you, I have built in the past when the problem arises make some 50mm 8 gauge galvanised mesh boxes on 4 posts with holes cut in the bottom of each side to allow a pheasant through to the feeder point as long as you put the posts in properly and a lid it solves the problem 100%
cheapest option, saves food for the shoot and prevents problems re occurring so happy happy shoot only outlay you have is the mesh and a bit of time, don’t pay out for deer food when you don’t have to, that can cost you, proofing the pheasant feeders is the best long term strategy

I agree with the thought process but bearing in mind that the OP didn’t say it was his shoots that are getting hammered, I doubt he will be in a position to start adding mesh around other peoples pheasant feeders. Plus, for example, I have been feeding on one of my farms/shoots today which is only 170 acres but I have around 50 pheasant feeders on that one alone so it would be a huge task and very expensive to add mesh around them all.

But, you are right to point out the cost of feeding wild deer….which is of course why he is getting hassle from the other farms.

hi Pat
communication with the shoot would be the best way to go and get a bit of common ground and get a solution together, i would say the mesh would be the cheapest, long term and where i installed the mesh boxes it worked 100% problem solved - no feed problems is a happy shoot captain

Also use these made with 4 inch drainage pipe and a 90 bend on.

Work decent enough although need filling often so have made other kinds that hold more.
