Deer in Wales

Realise this is an old thread but im interested to find out what stalking opportunities there are in the North Wales area.

I was told just recently that muntjac have been sighted in the Caergwrle area. I wonder if they are following the Alun?

The Caergwrle muntjac have almost certainly come up the Alyn valley. I was aware of them being in the Rossett area some years ago and this would be a natural route of expansion for them.

Stevienicknacks there are very limited opportunities for stalking in North Wales. There are plenty of fallow deer in some areas but they are mostly on a few large estates which either offer commercial stalking or shoot the deer for venison. The best chance is to pick up a farm in an adjacent area but there are plenty looking for these opportunities. The other option is to try and predict how the deer will spread and pay a farm for non existent stalking on a long lease in the hope that the deer will arrive in shootable numbers before the lease runs out.

The Coed y Brenin and Clocaenog Forest fallow are mostly on FC ground and I don't think there's any stalking offered to the public.

I'm sure that the spread of roe and muntjac will provide opportunities in the years to come but at the moment I have to travel to Herefordshire or Wiltshire for my roe.

You can get fallow stalking at a price and one estate that offers this is Kinmel near Bodelwyddan, the estate used to be on lease to Diana Hunting but in the past few years has taken the stalking back in house, built up the umbers as far as the poachers will allow, and is taking the odd paying stalker.

You can also get some goat stalking in Snowdonia.

He saw one last weekend walk accross his field.

he is only seeing one at a time. This makes me think it is on the edge of a herds range and maybe these are yearling bucks that have been pushed out.

it is great ground for them in a hamlet called Bryn-Rhyd-Yr-Arian.

These deer are outliers from the Elwy valley herd Bryn-Rhyd-Yr-Arian being only about 3 miles from the main centre for fallow in the area.

Thanks for the info Paul. Id be interested in hearing any news on deer within the area. Looks like potential for the future and as you suggested approaching a farmer early would be a good idea. I do have a bit of land I shoot on already within the Wrexham and Chester area but haev never seen any sight of deer. Would be great if the numbers grew and spread across the area.

Stevie,

As you already shoot in the area you will also know it is plagued by an excess of two legged vermin who seem to crawl out the woodwork wherever you seem to go. A while ago, in my old neck of the woods, there were several cases of a crowd of said Neanderthals turning cats loose in the middle of a field and then setting dogs on them. With idiots like that roaming around what chance will any deer have to find a quiet corner to couch down and chew the cud?

Incidentally, until not that long ago I undertood the stalking at Coed y Brenin had been let to someone from beyond the Mersey for many years who then sub-let to willing wallets. I don't know why but that cosy arrangement was brought to an end by a new broom at FC Wales and deer management brought back under their own control.

I wish you luck in finding a suitable permission and do keep us posted should any turn up. As you say, it would be great if they could establish themselves in the area.

Anyone have any knowledge of any deer around the Aberystwyth/Talybont/Machynlleth areas...i still have a fair bit of access to land around there and got home last summer for a week with the rifle after rabbits and fox but didnt see any sign of any deer or hear any stories of anyone having seen any.

There's a fair chance that there might be muntjac in that area but not much else at the moment. I was told by the Deer Initiative Wales that muntjac had been reported from the Rosset/Marford area back in 2007 but as others have said it wouldn't take much for the lampers and dogmen to clear them out. Apart from reds and a few roe in the Peak area and a few muntjac in the Dane valley, Cheshire is pretty clear of deer for such a rural county.

There are a few fallow in the Dolgellau area, up the Wnion valley towards Bala, and in the Coed y Brenin and a few adjacent woods and roe are creeping in from further south and east and might be close to Aberystwyth. However the FC have had a "shoot on sight" policy for roe in Wales despite their website mentioning that the General Public can expect to see them in one or two Welsh woodlands including Coed y Brenin.

Not that i've seen? none round Hope or Penyffordd area.

Had reports of Fallow towards Lower Kinnerton but no 100% confirmation

Hi Lambsey

I was talking to a guy about this subject, He was in the Golden Groves pub by Rosset.
Apparently the was a girl that had seen a fallow deer in the area, she even had a picture of it on her phone.
I have only heard this secondhand. So maybe just maybe one day.

There was a fallow buck seen over a few days with cows on the Gwysaney Estate near Mold some years ago but it was a one off, I have no idea where it came from or where it went.

Just to add to the thread, I suspect the sighting of the Muntjac near Rossett in 2007 was by my self as I informed the DI at the time. There was also a Fallow killed on the by-pass near Rossett around the same time period, but when i followed the story up, it was an escapee from the outskirts of Llay where it had been kept as a pet...As an aside, I have also seen an otter crossing the slip road in Rossett as well...

I was up on the hills above Chirk castle last year and one of the farmers said that he saw the odd fallow from time to time. Not sure if they are "wild" or escapee's from a herd that are kept in a paddock near Chirk itself..

A few years back I also a few Fallow off the side of the main road near Cilcain, possibly Afonwen. I don't recall exactly the area, but it was much nearer to Mold than I had seen them previously.

I've heard rumours of "deer" (either Fallow or Red) on Minera mountain and the Horseshoe area, but never seen any, plus they are always seen by a "friend of a friend" , but reading this, I guess their is a possiblity. I was also told that there used to be wild goats up over the Horseshoe but again I've never seen them.

I read this thread with some interest,I also shoot around the Mold, Ruthin and LLandegla and LLangollen regions and have done so for a few years, but have never seen any signs of deer or never heard from any of the farmers who have sighted any.
In the last 2 years I have frequented the areas foxing and using high quality NV equipment with my shooting partner.we use NV in conjuction withIr torches and also now and again will also lamp areas,In all this time we have never seen anything resembling a deer, but now with this new information ,we will keep a special eye on our permissions and let you know what we see in the areas we shoot on.
I am visiting a few of the hill farmers tomorrow and will ask them if they have noticed any activity, during the recent winter snow.
