Different cleaning rods for different calibres?

Quick one - can you use the same cleaning rod for multiple calibres or is it advised to get specific rods to match calibres?

I currently have a Pro-Shot .22-.26 Cal rod for my 6.5 CM but can this be used for .30 cal with the correct jag attached and patches? Or am I better off buying a new 'Pro-Shot .270 Cal Upwards'?

Any help - much appreciated!

Yes, so the .30 cal jag will fit on the .22-6.5mm rod but I suppose my question is will it damage the rod/rifle if using a rod designed for smaller calibres?

I have used anything to hand from the rod rack, as long as it's small enough to go through, the main thing is to use the correct patch and jag size, make sure if you are using a very small for cal, to be careful if having to apply a bit of force.

yes i use a tipton rod for 22 cal for my 22c\f then i change the 22 cal jag for a 6mm for my 243 never had a problem bs.

It depends how many calibres you have.. also barrel lengths. I very much like Tipton cleaning rods and have two rods for each calibre, one for jag and one for brush, it just makes cleaning pain free and the rods are good value for money, or were when I bought mine over 10 years ago..

A standard tipton will go from 22 upto 30cal easily the only different one i have is a 17 specific for the hmr a box of brushes and jags is all you need

The larger cal rods are slightly thicker/stronger than the small cal, less easy to bend when (if required) a greater force is applied.
I use a Pro-Shot .22-.26 Cal rodfor all my rifles which includes a 30-06.

I have only had two sizes of rod. A red plastic covered A J Parker which was and is .270" and upwards through .280 Remington and .30/06 to .303 to 8x60S and I even use it with a .45" calibre phosphor bronze to clean my AYA .410" and another rod of varyious make over the years for my 6mm Remington, .243 Winchester and any .22LR rifle that I had. The red A J Parker are far superior to the contemporaneous yellow Parker Hale. The red A J Parker were dipped to coat them. The Parker Hale used shrink fitted plastic tube! As Edna Parker said on Century there was so much yellow stripped plastic during the Imperial Meeting the firing point looked as if it had been sown with daffodils.

I always take the calibre on them as a rough guide. So long as they are able to fit nicely and the brushes do the job, what's not to like?

There’s absolutely no gun care query which cannot be answered by buying something that you don’t currently own.
Oh yes, the internet and RFDs are full of stuff you didn’t know you needed until you saw them and are excellent at filling drawers.
