Divorce & Spouse Moving Out....

What? An RFD you do business with and have been a customer of is wanting sixty-six quid a month? That's awful.

No, that's pretty good. They charge £6 per month per gun. They say there's a lot of paperwork, then there's the insurance too. All will be handed over scopeless and in VP90 impregnated gun socks. Will keep all bolts with me as wouldn't want those to go missing. May cost me £300 all in all, but a small price to pay compared to having them seized or the door put through.

Will call BASC back when stored as to whether I should notify the FLD that they are away from the home and send a copy of the receipt?

Some places charge £20pcm. Though they may haggle for a number of guns.
But, 11 guns is a lot of storeage space, in a facility that probably wasn't cheap to set up.

A friend had his entire wardrobe (the clothes, not the wardrobe itself) cut up with a pair of wallpaper scissors, when he split up with a girlfriend. Came home to find the room littered with squares of cloth.

Been there got the badge and you must either get them to a RFD or if you have a shooting friend transfer them to their certificate and store them there. Alternative you could store them at a friends as long as it was in a secured cabinet to which they have no access, get your FEO advise first if considering this option.

Even the most amicable of divorces can turn sour esp when solicitors are involved and I suggest you get a truly experienced and specialist lawyer.

If her lawyer is on the ball then you will need to provide a valuation of your weapons as part of the settlement. Both sides are legally required to declare all assets.

Don't try to hide anything because even if you do even though you have got your divorce then in years to come if anything comes to light you could find yourself back in court.

There was a long piece on Radio 4 last month on this very topic, particularly in relation to pensions.

Further advice is make sure that any maintenance agreement is water tight and in particular make appropriate arrangements should either you or your ex has an untimely death (eg life insurance and guardians for children under 18)

That's a cheap price to pay. I recently paid £200 per month for 10 guns. Total of two months £400 for a false claim which was cleared up within a week of my statement. Of course the wheels of justice move slowly hence two months after lots of pressure from myself to get them back. If ever a next time I'll let the police store them at their cost and inconvenience.

The last thing that you want to do is let the police anywhere near your guns. Having seen firsthand the storage arrangements at more than one police station. It is the last place that you want them. Damage, rust to name two common occurrences.
The safest place is with a RFD or a gun club where you could still get some use of them.

I know a RFD who has more than one set of guns in storage, one of which is into years. Because they allowed themselves to be in a position where the police came knocking. Which usually results in your FAC/SGC going too.

Get your guns in storage put the receipt in the safe. Keep your certificate safe and whatever you do don’t hand it over unless they are actually revoking it.

There’s many a man without a ticket because they volunteered to hand it over.

If I was ever in the position where divorce was a possibility my guns would be in storage. Before anything else got sorted they’d be out of the house. I haven’t spent the last twenty odd years keeping my nose clean to lose my ticket foolishly.

Well, got home today and all is amicable, my wife doesn't want any scenes or upset, but will still be taking all 11 guns to the RFD on Friday morning.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Hopefully the thread will help anyone else in the future as there wasn't much or anything in my search for 'divorce' on here....

I'm currently laying on a hospital bed wother a heart beat 9ver 180 typing on a phone screen I can bearly read. So I'll be brief.
Firstly, I had nothing to fear as I was clearly innocent of the claims and had several witnesses. Also to keep my guns at a cost of £2400 per year in an RFD is not something that I am stupid enough to do.
Unlike many, I don't depose the police generally. In fact I have a lot of respect for the job they do. If they came back with some rust on them I'd do the same as I did as a marine and clean the f#####!

Good luck in hospital. if your rifles end up in police storage you will not just have rust to worry about look up the old posts about Brithunter and the missing gear that the police took from him and was lost or worse by them??

My 2p and I know this has been done before
I would if you have a shooting partner request that your safe with no access by him be placed at his/hers home .it would be like moving to a new house or same but both have each others guns on each others cert , that way she can do as she please with access to your home until your sorted and plod wont take your guns away ?? then having them in some cage like stack wood only getting them back once you can prove to them they are to placed in a safe storage (RFD) but this then brings up a new problem that being access to your guns when you wish to go shooting ?
duel ownership would be my choice until your fixed .

Thanks, but my shooting partner 'Missfire' passed away in 2014. Going to see his widow on the 11th November as I have done every year since he passed.

Unfortunately I have 3 safes (RL7x2 & 1 RL5), all off which have been built into the extension I did last year, so they're not coming out. For the sake of a few hundred quid, will happily have them stored at a trust worthy RFD. I think the BASC are right for me to play it as I see it, but as others say, just not worth the risk.

I'll have plenty and more time to shoot when it's all done, so a small sacrifice now won't be that inconvenient.

i'm guessing even my sub 12ft/lb air rifle will need to go too, but could possibly keep that at a neighbours?

Some sage advice really to lodge your guns elsewhere, wherever that is. I can also agree that the facilities the cops have for storing any firearms are pretty abysmal in most cases.

Your soon-to-be ex and you may well be getting on fine and dandy now, but the point is that when she leaves, her priorities change significantly. No longer is she worried about keeping a good relationship with you (daughter considerations excepted), but will be focussed on her new life, home and (if not now, in the future) partner. You will be pretty far down the list of considerations. That's just life. So to use your possession of firearms as a lever is something to never be ignored. You are quite right to have them out of the house until things have been on an even keel and the possibility of her coming by, except as a visitor who knocks and waits to be invited inside has passed. Good luck in what must be a turbulent time for you.

Must admit i'm always saddened when i read threads like this, not going to dispute all the advice given but it is sad that shooters (probably the most law abiding folk in the country) have to resort to this every time they split up with a long term partner/wife.

Totaly understand the reasons (on the polis side too) etc, but wot happens in the future, everytime u have an argument with someon in the pub= guns in storage.
U just wonder where it wil all stop. U can hardly fart nowadays without asking permission 1st without them coming round to take ur guns

Wot happens if ur a keeper/stalker or pest controller who needs rifles daily??

I will put it simply there’s a damn good chance any firearm stored by the police. Will be knackered when you get it back. I don’t care how good a job you can do of cleaning your rifle. You won’t get pitting out of the barrel.

Been there done that simply remember this Sandy...... in divorce the woman always has the upper hand and will be supported by the system especially if kids are involved.
Forget all the equality stuff as it just doesn't apply in this case (divorce) the male is normally on a loser.
Firearms and guns just add further complications so get them safely stored away with a friend or RFD.

Pm for phone number if you want a chat, I'm the one who bought Missfire's 204.

Hi Eldon,

Do you still have it? Going to see Janet on the 11th. Going to RFD's tomorrow to drop all off, but keeping the bolts.

Your right there.... the house was mine, 7 years before we got wed... my biggest regret! That said at 46, with a good job I've plenty of time to make a new life, knowing what I then acrue she won't be entitled to a share of.

Yep been here before, I stored mine at the local gun shop , lucky I did as she claimed I threatened her with one but they had been in storage for a month.
Its a cheap option for piece of mind.

^^^^this! heard of this a few times - store the guns and don't tell anyone you have done so, then if she tries to use it as a rod you can use the fact she's a complete liar to your advantage!

You do recover Sandy ,my first wife now very ex ,went down the he said road but i,d already taken sage advice only had 1 shotgun and 3 air rifles but they all were sold so when she tried the threats and allegations routins she was left red faced to say the least .Good luck

Thanks all.

The rifles all went on Friday including my sub 12ftlb air rifle. I still have the bolts and the ammunition however, but safely licked away and no gun to shoot them out of....

The question now being whether I apply for shared custody of 50/50.
