DIY Stag handled folder

Thought I’d share a wee knife project I undertook recently.

I have a few Svord Peasant friction folding knives, good blades but the simple plastic handles are kinda boring and ripe for modifying

Here's an early modified on with a tough acryllic handle I made ages ago

I love stag handled designs so had a bash with some stag antler and tried to improve the “in hand” shape

The antler cutting I chose fits in my hand really well so started on my "rustic" handle.. the new shape compared to the factory handles below

Simply cut, filed and smoothed a rough shape, step drilled the holes and fitted the internal stop screws and some bolts.

Looked a bit oversized at first but just feels right in the hand, fits me perfect and I've left a good rough finish on the stag for superb grip.

Unfortunately my resources are a bit thin on the ground so had to make do with some stainless set screw and bolts, might look better with brass but easy enough to replace whenever I get round to it.

Not exactly Stu Mitchel or Alan Wood standards but good fun tinkering if nothing else, passes the time at work :D

That has come up really well. I've not tried a folder yet but your post gives me just the incentive to give it a go!

Did you use liners between the antler and the blade? Couldn't tell from the photos.

Thanks WG,

The thought of fitting liners didn't even cross my mind, I might just do that!
I'm sure I have some thin brass plate in my garage which should do the job nicely and will be easy enough to fit.
Would be interested to see your folder whenever you get round to making one too!

After reading your post I ordererd one of the plain metal Svord Peasant knives from Heinnie Haynes this morning (http://www.heinnie.com/Peasant-Knife-Slim-Metal-PK-/p-0-0-8252/), but pressure of work means it will be a few weeks yet before I have the time to really devote to it. I have some sambar scales that I might use, or maybe I'll cut up one of the sets of red antlers in the garage. I'll post a picture when I'm done.

Thanks again for the inspiration!

That looks perfect for a bit of tinkering, should be great with the sambar scales and I'd imagine you can go straight on the metal handle and use them as liners.
Excellent value too.
Its a bummer when work gets in the way, I've got to replenish a few your namesake salmon patterns for an assault on the springers next, not enough hours in the day eh..

Good luck

Still away , got just under a week left WS, I've never tried working with buffalo, seen it used on a few sticks before, came up braw when it was polished though.

That looks really well!

I've always had a soft spot for the Peasant, and the idea of using whatever's around to rehandle one seems in good keeping with it's name. The blades are great so it's nice to see justice done to one with some decent materials for the handle.

I've to admit to being a bit of a knife fan, but to be honest the customs that folk are forever spending such huge sums on nowadays don't do an awful lot for me. Your Peasant with it's staggy handle on the other hand - does! That, is a bonnie wee knife....

Finally had a spare Sunday so had a go at putting together the Svard Peasant folder, in my case using some sambar antler.

I drilled out the original pins and used 6mm brass rod for the main pins and 3mm brass rod for the retaining pin. The sambar I bought from Mick Wardell (http://www.wardellscustomknives.com/) which I then cut in half and sanded down. I glued these to the original steel liners and then put it all together. A lot of sanding and polishing later it all came together.

It makes for a nice little project!

You've made a top job of that WG!!

I quite fancy giving it a go with the base kit you've used, those liners make a huge difference and the pins worked out really well.

You've got me in the mood to have another bash.

I had to go a bit agricultural with my screws but only what I had to hand, wishing now I'd waited and used some brass rod as you have.

The stag scales have a great finish and "character" looks brilliant. Just don't go leaving it at your erse on the hill ..:D

Have you any plans for another?

Can't beat a bit of tinkering eh

Thank you!

Yes, I might well have another go.

I did think with this one about using the hollow brass rod for the back end, so I could tie a fluorescent lanyard to it! I also bought some 1.5mm brass plate with the idea of cutting liners out of that so everything matched, but then realised I probably didn't have the necessary skill or tools  I bout a pair of brass loveless bolts that I was already to fit when I luckily realised that the hole in the blade would be too big for the screw and would rattle around, so another reason to go with the solid brass rod.

The antlers give the new knife some real "heft", so for mark II I might try a lightweight model. I've got some nice wood knife scales knocking around that I can use for this one.

Just need to get a new donor kit and another wet Sunday!

They look great gents :) well done , I'm really tempted to have a go was it difficult? I've never done a knife handle before?

No, not really. The Svard is nice because you can use the original stainless handle as the liners. So as long as you've got some glue, a drill and some polishing materials, all you really need to buy is the brass rod and whatever handle material you want to use.

Thanks Willie I've ordered a svord knife so I'm going to have a go :) I'm off stalking this weekend but when I get back I'll hopefully get some pics up

Thanks again , jim

Pimping Svord peasant's has a massive following they are cheap and very easy to do with basic tools and you get a pretty usable knife

Warning you may get over run with them it can be addictive

And if you want to carry them in public generally check the cutting edge is under 3" or you need a specific reason to have it like a fixed blade if its over you can grind the tip down or the choil end up (its cutting edge length NOT blade length)

COpy of a post i did on a knife forum when i did a peasant

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I decided on using the Svord peasant as the model and had bought a few of the plastic ones to play with i did a blade design a while back and couldnt at the time resist adding in a couple of extra tools :D (was doing the trolley key ) and making sure the cutting edge length was S139 legal (which most Svords arnt)

the blade is also a bit more heavy duty at 3.5mm has a 20 deg scandi grind

Pivot pin is proper folder stainless pivot 1/4" dia with Torx screws
also used some washer bearings the blade has a textured finish and as scandi grind could do with the clearance on the scales.
stop Pin is 3mm (currently tube as ive run out of rod )
rear spacer is 2 layers of 2mm Orange Kydex and the rear bolt is the same as the front pivot.

scales are 1/4" Orange G10

So like the Ruger 10/22 which you can build an entire gun from custom non factory parts, this is a svord where ive replaced the handle the blade and the bolts  other than that its as original even managed to build another svord out of the leftovers :O:D

(note: had turned up the brightness on a few of the pics :O imsure you can spot which ones)
