No idea if the original Zulus are better at night than the new 4k but just for added info, the new 4k, in my view, is pretty disappointing in terms of its ability in proper darkness.
I was really surprised as the day and last legal hour performance is really very very good. Last night I went out for a proper test for 90mins after 8pm. Conditions were perfect, crispy thermal image so no excuses. Using a Solaris on a variety of brightness settings and flood to spot as well as changing from 4k to HD and using other normal and enhanced modes and making sure the diopter and focus were properly adjusted, I was just not really impressed. Anything over x6 mag was grainy and fairly poor. You could absolutely ID and shoot stuff comfortably out to 250+yds but in comparison to my Vulpine and March scope combo, it was terrible. With the latter, it can resolve a better image at 400yds than the 4k can do at 150yds. Literally night and day if you pardon the pun.
I did not buy it for night time performance as i wanted something for day time mid range pest control using the ballistic thingy and LRF and mostly for last light deer. It has already proven epic at those two things but as an out and out night vision tool. Personally I feel it is lacking. Functional but lacking.
When I got home and went and checked some footage on Youtube of both the DNT and other scopes like HIK showing fox shooting and stuff like that. It is very similar. You can see the grainy image and most people shooting on fairly low mag to keep the picture usable. I guess some compromises are made in order to get them so good in the daytime and early evening. Maybe the newer iterations from Nocpix and HIK will improve the night time performance?
