Hi my older lab is getting a bit stiff as soon as we get in the door after picking up ( have been for a few seasons) so gave her the last of the metacam last night and sorted her out . So this morning ask the vet for a repeat bottle to be told not only do I have to pay for a consultation “ just to check she’s still ok to have it approximately 15 times a year “ but this is my question she said they are finding it hard to get hold metacam but have a alternative I think she said something like loxicom ???? And wondered if anyone has heard of it and if it’s any good and does the job if so as I’m fed up of paying £39 consultation fee does this loxicom ? Come in big bottles. Sorry about FOR SALE prefix any information would be appreciated cheers

Thanks guys another question is there anything as good as loxicom or metacam that you can buy over the counter by passing the vets needles consultation fee ????? My labs are already on yumove for working dogs that’s great on a day to day basis it’s just after a days very hard work. Thanks

so loxicom is supposed to be the same and does do the same job, however its make up is somewhat different. one of my dogs was sick every time with loxicom and not Metacam. and another was vice versa. my vets insist on a physical check-up every six months if prescribing any meds.

I'm sure our vets will correct me but for a quick bit of relief used occasionally you can give a dog aspirin to ease there pain and help there mobility as it's a nasid.

Thanks for the information, Just looking and there is another called Mloxidyl any news on that one it looks like another substitute for metacam??

With my last GWP on pain relief towards the end she was prescribed Metacam, but our trusted Vet also told us that if in the event we ran out we could use half a Paracetamol (half would be 250 mg) and used in moderation it wouldn’t do any harm.

But l would consult your own Vet about it’s safe use before you use anything that isn’t prescribed if you are concerned .

Good luck with your lab, hope you sort something that suits you both, pain relief and monetary relief.

I have given our border collie my unusedTramadol for his pain they prescribe it under a different name but the same stuff, my vet sometime ask's if I'm ok with him prescribing human drugs.

Metacam, Loxicom, Meloxidyl and several other trade names all contain the same active ingredient called Meloxicam. I have come across dogs that tolerate one better than the other but that is rare.
For occasional pain relief in dogs (NOT CATS) I often prescribe paracetamol to my patients with a dose of 10mg/kg, ie a 25kg Labrador will get 250mg or half of a standard 500mg paracetamol tablet up to three times per day. I wouldn’t use aspirin due to its prolonged anticoagulant effects.

Same here today, hard day beating yesterday and she's stiff as a post today. So it will good to know what we can use.

You need a prescription from the Vet of course, probably a consultation fee (As others have already said)

I reckon £39 is well worth it for not causing horrendous liver damage or any other side effect on a loyal companion.
Vets aren’t trying to rip you off... they may have better course of action in the long run and need to cover their backs against people self prescribing because they’ve been on the internet.

No one would mind paying £39 to stop you dog suffering, but paying £39 over and over again for the same treatment is a different story, I'm on medication and will be for the rest of my life, I havn't seen a doctor in 3 years but have had the odd telephone call to see hows things are and keep getting a repeat prescriptions. What is the difference.
You say vets are not trying to rip you off but at the end of the day they are a business and that business is trying to make as much money as possible, They are still some good old vets out there but there is also some out there who will get as much money out of you as possible and good luck to them but it does get expensive people who can't afford it.
