DOUBLE RIFLE - 450/400

Hi all,

I would like to get myself a 450/400 built however I have seen a few hunting videos with the barrels being ported. Would anyone know who makes these rifles or who could build one.
Thank you.

A double rifle with ported barrels?
I wouldn't have thought it possible to port double barrels unless the ports are only on the tops of the barrels. in the case of a SxS, Is that the case?

You are definitely talking very serious money to get a 450/400 built. I assume that you are talking about the likes of Westley Richards, Purdey or Holland & Holland, and you are prepared to wait a few years for them to do so.

The rifle is ported at the top near the sights. S&S for sure. WR, Purdey’s and Holland’s are way outside my budget. Would be an European brand. Not sure if Hyme makes one.

Is it important to you to have one built? If not I think I’d be heading to the auction houses. You’ll be buying an English made double rifle for well under 10k

I asked a similar question recently and got several helpful suggestions here Who would make a rifle for you?
But double rifles are in an entirely different league altogether, I doubt if there are more than half a dozen gunmakers who are up to the task of producing a decent double rifle in this country, and then at what cost.

To be affordable I think it will have to be a continental gunmaker. Chapuis produce excellent rifles and make more double rifles than anyone else in the world so I wonder if they would be in the running. I just hope that things haven't changed to much with them since they were bought by Beretta. Heym are the other company that I would be looking at, other than that it would have to be one of the smaller bespoke gunmakers.

30-06 have you posted a similar question on the Nitro Express forum as I'm sure there will be someone on there who would be able to suggest a maker of your dream rifle.

I've seen a couple of rifles that have been ported shoot but all have been bolt action rifles. I must admit to being very sceptical as to how practical and how well porting of the barrels on a double would work. It would be interesting to see such a rifle shoot.

Have not posted on Nitro. Did speak to Chapuis as I had a 375 O/U built for myself a couple of years ago and they don’t do ported barrels. Shall look into Hyme and see what they say.

I did not know one existed till I saw a buffalo hunt on MOTV with Prince Albert shooting. He has a beautiful rifle.

Would like an new age rifle rather than an old English one.

Thanks that's interesting, I will look it up.
I take it you meant Franz Albrecht Oettingen-Spielberg of Wild Boar Fever fame and not Queen Victoria's consort.

😂😂. In our fellow eyes who love the sport it’s the one and only wild boar man.
have a look at these snaps I took from the video.

Ah just as I assumed the vents are only on the tops of the barrels with no side venting as you would only be able to vent the one side and it would be unbalanced.
I had a look at the Magna-port website and it mentioned that barrels must have a minimum of 0.13" wall thickness. I haven't measured them but the barrel on both of my express rifles are fairly thin, not that I've ever considered porting them. Presumably the barrels on the rifle that you desire will be fairly thick for a double rifle?

Yes that right they would have to be thick. Shall do some research. Had planned IWA this year and was under the assumption I would bump into Albert and ask him myself, hopefully when it take place in March 2021.
