Driving after 70

Having read few bits on here I was determined to get it all done promptly and have no issues.
I had picked up on do it by post to retain entitlements and wanted to keep C1.
So 3 months back the forms arrived. Was I ready, yes I knew from my oppo at work I would need a medical and had all the details.
I booked a medical the day the forms came, filled in the dvla forms went for the medical in a van in an industrial estate with several taxi drivers. Sent the lot to the dvla. Great I thought.
Then I get the lot back with a short note you have not applied for an hgv licence. I had put C1 on original form. They had included a form so I filled it in and sent it all back.
Nothing occurs until early September after me starting to check the post. I get a letter saying the dvla medical team wants more info and will consult my GP.
Four weeks have gone by and I have communicated multiple times with the surgery. They are asking if I have a consultant to comment on my cognition. Well no as my cognition is fine , and surely they would have referred me to a consultant. They apologise for the delay saying they have been busy and I was put on the back burner. I am fit and well. I asked to see the form so I might have some idea of the issue, but never did. I did hear it was actually about my hip operated on 9 years ago. I have done 7 years full time work with it and just had a 9 year check up, all fine the doctors get a copy of that report. Eventually as my last day approached I ramped up the pressure for them to act and asked for a section 88 to maintain my car driving.
The day after it expired I get an email all forms are favorably completed and returned to dvla and section 88 approved. So in 24 hours it is all done.
So I can drive the car but not an ambulance until I can show a licence.
Same for renewal, had to have an extension it took that long. Voting with my feet now.
