Drone for checking ground?

Just bought one of these wee things.

Anyone else fly them? I thought it might be a handy way of keeping an eye on deer numbers on my patch. Any tips, hints, or advice anyone can offer would be appreciated 👍
I had one for a wee while but got bored of it fairly quickly.
These are almost on par with the DJI Mini equivalent but a good bit cheaper

Don’t forget to register with the CAA and get a flyer ID and Operator ID. If caught without, could mean you risk your next FAC renewal inadvertently

I’ve got a DJI Air2S bought off someone on here. Larger than the minis, its cameras are stunning. Not used to recce grounds (I would love a thermal one but too expensive) but I have used it to locate shot fallow in standing crops to minimise damage. Doing that, it’s provided excellent evidence to the farmer of the damage being caused and nicely reinforced my need to be on the ground.

I meant to demo a regular drone. 😂
I have had a cheapie and was very impressed with it. It was a simple $75 cheapie. I used two full boxes of.12g ammo to shoot the ****ing branches it was caught in lol. One box per branch. Shooting a single barrel baikal vertically does make ones shoulder sore i will add.
Seriously thinking of trying paramotor flying
Me also, love the idea of the safety factor.

From 2021 the first flight of my $75 dollar job. Visual line of sight flying only with no phone needed. It was fast, did back flips too and at times you lost sight of the ****. I had a lot of fun with it and it would get well up..est maybe half a k easy enough.
I just went out behind the sheds and hit go.

I don't need to worry about that with this one apparently. It's under the 250g weight threshold, so it's exempt 👍

Edit: Just checked, and apparently I do need an operator ID due to it having a camera on it

You can get the DJI Mini 4K Fly More Combo for £339 on Amazon.

Also get a Flyer ID - it’s free, and the test is a pretty straightforward Q&A format. By the time you’ve added anything to your drone like skids, blade guards or a strobe it will most probably exceed the 250g limit. The rules are currently under revision, and may well change in 2026, so it pays to have a Flyer ID. It also puts you in good stead should you want to move to something bigger in the future.

I bought the above recently as I want to use it to extend my other interest of photography. They are great fun, and do give the opportunity to get a completely different perspective on things. A drone certainly lets you get photos and video that otherwise would be almost impossible to achieve.

Although I thought it might also be interesting to use the drone to look at stalking ground, I honestly don’t think small drones like this will really help when it comes to monitoring deer, as the flight time is pretty minimal. They say you get 30 minutes or so from each battery, but realistically it is perhaps 20 if you have “return to home” set on.

Personally I think the real value from using a drone for deer management comes when it has thermal, and decent enough battery life to be used to survey a sizeable patch of woodland. Using one of these small drones to spot for muntjac or roe is likely to be a fool’s errand - if you do spot something, which is unlikely without thermal, you’re likely to be close enough to see it with a thermal spotter/binos anway,

Yep. I'll use it more for interest rather than any kind of management tool. I'm not a deer manager anyway, so it makes little odds.

Managed to get both Flyer and Operator ID this morning, so that's those bases covered.

Thanks for the advice 👍

Don’t forget that you will need to attach your Operator ID somewhere on your drone.

You can buy customised stickers for this - I used a seller called AirPixel, who offers a very good service:

Thanks! I was wondering how best to do that. I'd thought about maybe just using a Sharpie, but those stickers are a far better idea. Just ordered some, so thanks again 👍

They should turn up in a day or two.

I just stuck my sticker on the outside of my drone, but others stick them inside the battery compartment. So long as it’s on the drone somewhere you’re fine.

I don’t know about the Potensic drone, but the DJI Mini 4K is super easy to fly. It has auto take-off and land, but doesn’t have obstruction control, so you do need to think when flying it near overhanging trees, wires, etc. The DJI Fly software is pretty much self-explanatory, and there are some good videos on YouTube about the custom tweaks and features.

The 4K video is extremely good quality, and the still photos are excellent.
