The problem with death penalties is twofold. Firstly is the ethical debate about whether it's right to take a life at all. Secondly, any judicial system is flawed. You could argue that the British system, the forerunner of many in the world is up there with the best, but is blatantly far from perfect. So inevitably, however many safeguards are built into the legislation, there will come a time where an innocent person gets the chop.
Even f you inherently believe in the death penalty, is it right that you have a system that may lead to an innocent person being executed? That alone stops me advocating it.
However if you are in a jurisdiction that has the death penalty and do something that incurs it and get caught, then blame nobody but yourself!

Anyone who breaks the law, should suffer the consequences, it is their law in their land. People who try the law know what they are doing and know what the outcome will be. "When in Rome do as the Romans do" They knew the risks and thought they could beat the system. I am all for punishment to fit the crime and or law of the land. I agree with Shadrach 2986 and Woodsmoke. It was their turn, other may possibly learn from these, this will definitely open peoples eyes. I feel sorry for the families left behind and having to live with the knowledge.
If my son or daughter (They know to respect laws of different lands as taught whilst growing up, due respect) where in this scenario, as much as I love them dearly, they would need to take responsibility for their actions and face the law that is dealt by the governing bodies of that particular country and as much as it tore me apart, I would need to accept and respect the LAW. Capital punishment is not a bad thing, look at the over populated prisons (worldwide), in some countries, murder is a seven to ten year sentence, it is considered life, what is happening in this crazy forgiving world. We the tax payer are paying for all incarcerated law breakers, rapists, murders, thieves, etc..etc... All people need to do is respect the law and governing bodies.
Now then, not trying to escalate this thread in any way here, BUT, Who would be willing to put themselves forward for the firing squad if selected, just like jury service is decided??????? Thankfully I could not be on the list of potential one step forwarders, as I have already transgressed.
Maybe we could focus on those that definately deserve the ultimate sanction?. Adibolajo & Adebowale for instance?

Having already said it I am quite happy to do the Public a service particularly with the child abusers !
Rampant humanism will be the downfall of this country. I can't believe that we're paying exorbitant amounts of our taxes towards keeping prisoners sitting on their butts. The death penalty definitely has its place, but probably wouldn't reduce costs much if you see how long American prisoners can wait on death row.

It strikes me as an honourable way to go down though.
Happens a lot in war situations my friend. Not all people killed are guilty but then your life is on the line everyday if you are part of it. If one had to think about these things every time there was an engagement you would soon be on the plane home in a coffin. In our society today with DNA etc the chances are reduced to a minimum. A deer is a beautiful creature, could I ask how you can kill one and not have it on your conscience forever and what if they ate people, would you still hunt them, or would you be scared you might die ? All life is sacred even the animals we pursue, but some things are evil and need removing.

I suppose the moral distinction is made quite easy for me as I am a Christian. The bible is quite clear, and yes I'm talking about the New Testament and what Jesus said on the subject.
On a more practical level, I am not prepared to accept the fact that 4% of the people executed are likely to be innocent (see my previous link).

Or doesn't. WW1 and WW2 saw conscripted soldiers deliberately aiming above. It's even a problem with professional soldiers. That's why they have to be trained and trained and trained into pulling the trigger with the crosshairs on the human target. Even then it doesn't always work out.
My feeling about this is that state killing outside war is just too problematic, even in situations where people are banged to rights. If we give the state the power to take life, then it is able to abuse that power. It's a slippery slope. What happens if they then extend it? They might even adapt the law to be able to kill you if you protest about them changing the law in the first place.
I would rather make prisons re-adopt hard labour, which would provide more of a deterrent and produce something for all the money poured into prisons.
Being a Christian can be very hard in today's world and I understand your moral standpoint as I also share your Faith. There are however in my humble opinion certain times when it is necessary to terminate life to keep this world a safer place.
I'm also a Christian. I see where you're coming from, Mike. I still think that we should be able to act out forcefully against lawlessness (and terrorism). I do accept that I am human though, and that nothing is under my control. God is absolutely in control of everything.
