DSC1 cancelled

We all had a hard time with the targets my pass was only luck it was not the best weather. You was only a fraction out🤞for next test.

Just out of interest - how far out were you and in what direction? and what size is the approved target?
My misses were at 70m. Prone at 100m I was fine. My headshots at 10-25m were also fine. I shot low on one shot of 70m on each of my two tries, about 15-20mm out. One of them, I was actually only meant to be taking up the 1st stage of his 2 stage trigger, but with only a 1lb final pull it went off when I wasn't ready. Only second time shooting a rifle though so I'll be fine next time.

My practices on quad sticks were fine, but I was the greenest shooter on the rifles so Chris said to go sitting for the 70. Sitting made every breath affect my aim wildly.

My practice with a mates rifle, we simulated the DSC1 test and all went fine.

A few of us also found the target much easier to see first time round. For a second attempt, he staples on an a4 insert to cover your precious shot holes. The newer sheet was glossy paper and made it awful to aim at.

Sounds like it was just an off moment - hopefully you’ll be fine next time. 👍🏻

Surprised they recommended sitting at 70m as it’s probably the hardest position to master. Most people that I have spoken to were very glad when dmq dropped it from being compulsory and allowed the option to shoot standing for that bit.

I passed at first attempt but only by luck as jh1986 said they were more glossy than the print I brought so i just guessed were to aim🙏 . You will nail it next time use glossy black paper👍 Looking at my targets now from about five inches away from my eyes and I am struggling to see the ring on both targets.

Does anyone have a photo of the target to post to see where the ring is? The reason I ask is I’ve heard this on a few of the new versions and to me the person holding the DSC should be more pragmatic - anything in the below red circle is to me a dead roe deer, (ok, maybe not the most pretty if hits at the rear of the circle) so why fail someone for being 15mm outside the circle if you can’t actually see the circle? Is it not better to judge them on the ability to put the shots in a similar area?

So by that target, and the JH’s comments on his shot placement - I’d still bet it would be a dead clean shot roe within the red.

My concern is that you get over enthusiastic people doing the tests looking to fail people.

I brought the Target this did not help one bit as stated the target was glossy and i had to guess were to aim
The circle on the deer target within which your shots are required to hit is not supposed to be visible from the firing point. It would make a mockery of the whole thing if it were.

@angel eyes what is the diameter of the circle, 4"?

Like you, I was in my sixties when I did DSC1 and was due for cataract operations a few weeks after it. I had to use the rifles available from the trainers and couldn't get a clear sight picture with either of them when practising. On the day of the test one of the trainers brought a different rifle, a really nice CZ in .243, and I got on with the scope. With that rifle I was able to put all my assessed shots into a 2" group. If that rifle had not been available I would have struggled and had resigned myself to redoing the shooting assessment at a later date after my operations.

Link to the official target below. Mine were easily within your red circle. I did borrow Chris's rifle and the second I got behind it I did say I could see no reticule. He said it was because I was wearing glasses, so I will wear contacts next time. All I had was the thicker parts or the reticule at the very edge of the sight, so I was using them to make my own judgment of the reticule

Will you need to pay for the resit of the shooting test?
