DSC1 firearm pre approval essential?

Good morning!

I'm looking Into doing my DSC1, I hold an FAC already but only upto .17hmr, is it essential to already hold a slot for a deer adequate (and legal!) calibre? Or can I complete the course then stick in a variation application post completion?

Cheers!

Kev

A deer legal calibre is required to take the shooting test, but most course providers will have an "estate" rifle for the use of participants who don't yet have a suitable rifle of their own.

No requirement. You can take DSC1 without ever having handled an air rifle even .... estate rifles are available for hire on most courses I would imagine. Some experience of the basics and most importantly safe gun handling is always a plus though.

Depending on your local firearms dept you won't be granted a deer legal calibre until you've completed a DSC1. Although it's not a legal requirement in legislation its one of those rules made up if it suits

That makes sense like to be fair! Glad I wasn't going about it arse about face!

I can see the reasoning but in that case have it covered by legislation.

Some guys want to use their own rifle on the shooting test or want to go on paid stalks to gain experience in their rifle for prior to taking DSC1.

So I can see both sides, just don't make the rule up without legislative backing.

A similar situation to mine. I already had .22lr, .22WMR, .222 Rem and .223 Rem but wanted .243 Win for deer/fox etc. I asked for the .243 variation with a voluntary commitment to do the DSC1 plus some mentoring and the variation was granted on this basis for target in the meanwhile. I became familiar with the .243 and did the DSC1 in May with my own rifle, now after mentoring I'm on the cusp of asking for the target restriction lifted.

As said above, rifles are usually available from the training provider.

Helped one of my wife’s colleagues through his DSC1. He hasn’t yet even applied for his FAC but he passed it a couple of months ago.

DSC1 is also seen as short hand for a level of knowledge about deer, the law, firearms safety and competence with a rifle. In other words you understand the basics.
