DSC1 shooting resit passed

Hello All, as some of you may know I recently attended the DSC1 course run by the BDS at Kettering .This was sponsored by the Stalking Directory forum members. This was an excellent course HOWEVER I failed my shooting test with a two foot group!
Since that time I have been amazed at the help and kindness offered to me by members of the forum. Extra special mention must go to Jason from @Cotswold Sporting who took time and effort to go through the whole shooting test with me and also restored my confidence . This was one to one tuition !

Jason gave me the details of Calton Moor Rifle range where I booked a retest with the owner who is an assessor for the DSC1.

well today I spent a throughly enjoyable afternoon at Calton Moor. The facilities are excellent with a purpose built classroom and most importantly 100m tunnels where I undertook my shooting test. The owner Mike was not only very Knowledgeable and patient but was a superb teacher giving me the benefit of his practical skills.

I am so pleased to be able to say I PASSED 😄😄😁.

Thank you all again for the support. Kind regards Rookandrabbit.

Good man the result was never in question once we found you the right setting and got your mojo back.

When I took my shooting test last September two guys in front of me failed .
Those guys had shot deer in the past and were really destroyed .
Two us stepped up to take our test the other guy had problems with his sights and was told to step down and i was to continue alone.
At the time we were all pretty much wet due to rain I had to borrow a rifle for my test.
Took first two at a 100yds then moved onto 70yds on sticks first time I had used my sticks then 20yds head shot on sticks.
I had brought a full size target to get me used to the areas to shoot but on the test all this went blank at the time.
Got to the target I had passed at first attempt (don't know how to this day )
But those poor guys i felt more sorry for as we had been together for four days .
I heard later a few more had also failed the test.
So please keep practicing the shooting test time and time again every one said use stick instead of sitting.
Good luck

Personally I think that anyone looking to shoot quarry, whether it’s a rat or a red needs to be able to competently shoot whatever group size is necessary from the ‘usual’ distance expected for a shot, consistently on paper before going for the real thing.

We are shooting live animals and our job is to dispatch them in as humane a manner as possible, ie a clean kill.

We will all have bad days - a wayward shot that requires a quick follow up - but they should be very few and far between.

So my advice is that if you have failed the shooting test due to a 2’ group but then passed sometime later, then join a club and go to a range and practice by putting bullets in targets from 100-600 yds, learning to read the wind, what effects elevation other than distance, getting your breathing right and learning your weapon over a few hundred rounds (and keep doing it if you can so as to keep your skills honed).

When you can consistently shoot good groupings at <200 (ie sub 2moa) and reasonable groupings at 600 then you are ready to do it for real, as most deer will be shot within 200m.

This way when you are in the field then your chances of inflicting a wound shot rather than a kill shot will greatly diminish and you will feel far more comfortable and capable of determining if a shot is within your capabilities or not.

Many congratulations on passing, and for your persistence in following it up and passing. This shows what support we have through the membership, and what makes this site head and shoulders above all others. Thank you to all involved.
