Dumping of shot pheasants

I was saddened to see a video by anti bloodsports activists showing pheasants being dumped into a reported mine shaft on shoot land near Machynlleth.That area has a few well known specialist high bird shoots.If anything that will contribute to the demise of driven pheasant shooting then behaviour like this will.We already have many challenges to all our Fieldsports and yet we continue to offer own goals such as this.

Sadly it does go on. This week in Perthshire I understand the going rate at the game dealers was £0.02 - yes - 2 pence per bird! Crazy!!

In which case they should have been responsibly disposed of, not dumped in a way that was bound to result in negative publicity.

I don't know what you are all worried about next year we will be shooting cartridges that are treble the price they are now. And the game dealers will be paying a very good price for them.

I finished being involved with large shoots several years ago now.
I was saddened by the lack of any interest in the shot birds by those whome shot them. For over a decade an old gamekeeper friend and I have been pondering the unsustainability of the commercial shoot.
My ever decreasing ground to shoot over is partly due to abstaining from the large estates around here that have syndicate shoots with large counts of birds. The few small shoots where I hope the birds are treated with respect once shot are fully manned.
All my personally shot birds are cooked or dressed and given to friends. I don't just plonk shot birds on folk in a pretense of generosity!

If the video was made by anti fieldsports activists I would be concerned about how factual the footage was. They are not known for telling the truth about fieldsports

Someone remarked, on another Forum, that if we don't eat the game we shoot that we are little better than the live pigeon shooters of yesteryear. I have to agree.

Does the video clearly show without doubt full bodied pheasants (not breasted out), and without doubt freshly killed and not defrosted ? Birds that go to game dealers are blast frozen in feather.

I saw the footage on Twitter and there is no excuse for it and it cannot be condoned.
They looked intact carcasses, even if breasted out, this is illegal dumping of waste.
Pictures like this will only increase the pressure on shooting activities.

I'm saddened that you believe anything posted by anti blood sports activists. Have you proof that they didn't purchase the birds themselves and dump them down a mine shaft whilst videoing the incident. Pretty fortunate that they were there filming it don't you think? Wouldn't trust them any where near as far as I can smell them but despite their dreadful record of telling lies you have already acted as judge, jury and executioner. Nice work!

I have not seen the video and so can’t comment on it. However the various anti groups have a history of “stagged/semi staged” events to put field sports in a bad light. There was the film of the disposal of pheasants a couple of seasons back in to a pit, however the “ minor factual detail” missing was that they had been debreasted and in some cases semi skinned to remove legs. The old adage “ The camera never lies” is not fit for purpose often in the 21 century

I have heard of a large bag/expensive shoot this way that effectively had to give the birds to the game dealer as those who shot them didn't want them and the game dealer didn't pay for them (this was a significant number of birds)

I thoroughly agree, why are we surprised that the general public believe everything the antis say when we seem to believe it ourselves

I’ve just looked at the video and yes it looks as though it is a couple of dozen birds dumped by an individual, I was thinking from the outcry it was 100’s being dumped. Poor judgement on the employee’s behalf but at least he eats the game that he rears.

It may be a proper process, a legal "consideration" for them to change ownership to the game dealer. It seems quite proper to me.

Valueless to the estate perhaps, even unacceptable for human consumption (there are rules about how they should be handled, which not all estates can be bothered to comply with).

However I've found lots on offer from a local dog food supplier, along with various other "natural raw meat" stuff, which our dog mostly enjoys. But not the pheasant gunge, frankly it looked as if they had just been put through a wood chipper, feathers and all. He took one look at it then walked away, making his feelings quite obvious. Not inexpensive either. Duck, goose and venison also on their menu. A shame that that gets turned into dogfood as well.
