Dumping of shot pheasants

No different to shooting deer that are standing still. Stalking and head shooting pheasants with a 22 is a much better hunt than driving them over a line of guns.
I always shoot pheasants when they're either on the ground or in the trees (depending on the time of day). It's a very sensible way to do it.
I hope the ones shot in the trees are not shot with anything which fires "bullets".

Always amazes me how many game shooters don't eat game.
This is something that always has puzzled me. I worked with several young keeper's in my time and not one of them eat game or venison. They seemed to prefer to waste their money on McD's or takeaways , even Scotch pies.
Even now I know a great many folk who shoot deer but certainly will not eat offal or venison.
It just shows how well off most people are, even if they believe they are not. From being weaned I have eaten everything put in front of me excluding cooked sprouts, raw yes but not cooked. If you don't eat it,( other than vermin/predators) don't kill it. People generally have far too easy a life if they are able to forego free food.

No, I use a 410 for those.
Disagree on the basis that pheasants are pretty stupid and feel safe around humans unless you get particularly close, even wild ones, so there is no real stalking involved. Deer on the other hand are likely to disappear at the sight, sound or smell of a human which makes it more challenging.

As for it being ‘better’ than driving them over a line of guns, that’s just your opinion which you are entitled too but the vast majority of pheasant shooters would disagree
You should try it some time.

Someone remarked, on another Forum, that if we don't eat the game we shoot that we are little better than the live pigeon shooters of yesteryear. I have to agree.
Instinctively, I'd tend to agree with that but the fact is that food waste is rife both here and globally whether it is meat, fish, fruit or vegetable. All those forms of waste are equally regrettable and morally dubious.

Some pheasants will be wasted, just as some rainforest and all the species within are wasted growing wasted food even for vegans who never throw any food away.

As a society we have become soft.

My grandparents generation eked out their food to last the whole week, and wasting food was seen as something akin to a sin. Very often they didn’t know where the next meal was coming from, or when it might arrive.

Today, food waste is rife, with the UK alone estimated to throw away over 9.5 million tonnes of food every year. The population expects to be fed on demand, with exactly what they want to eat, and with minimal preparation. Ideally they will eat ready meals and takeaways!

It is little wonder that, in a society such as this, shooting for food is seen as unnecessary, and game as a food source is viewed with suspicion.

Yes, I have. Many times. It was the people that sickened me and eventually turned me away from that aspect of fieldsports, rather than the practice itself.
The same sort of people, I guess, who'd shoot pheasants all day and then not take a brace home.

Totally agree with you, having been on a small syndicate and rough shooting previously I got invited on a high pheasant day a couple of weeks back. Ethical shoot where all the birds go to a dealer, apparently. At the end of the day I took 6 braces of the 8 braces left for the guns home as most of the other guns just walked passed them.

Found it hugely disrespectful and quite shocking.

so true my very elderly parents hate throwing away any food, probably the change over the years to fast foods, fast food takeaways and the modern way of living are significantly to blame, preparing a meal with raw ingredients at home to cook now seen as time consuming with too little time to do so, or costly. Most just happy to watch master chef whilst eating a mcD’s Then all wonder why we have such heath issues in the country.

Yes, but it’s not much of a hunt I’m sure you’ll agree
Yes and no. Sometimes yes it is easy but sometimes they are very switched on birds. Released birds are easy but if the survive a few years they learn all the threats including man.
I don't think we can make a sweeping judgment here.

A solid dose of pure grease in a fatty pastry. Used to take Sika to a butcher and see them being made in the back of the shop. Never touched one since.
My father had a similar experience.

He was a photo-journalist back in the 70's, and one assignment was to document food producers based in London.

He found a company involved in the manufacture of hot-dogs.

Once seen, never eaten 🤢

The crux of the matter is that game is now a by-product of game shooting, to some extent it always has been, but current production levels have completely overwhelmed the market to the extent that prices have totally collapsed and you can’t even give it away.
As long as the demand for shooting outstrips the market for game its not going to change and deer are likely to be the next victims of this trend, I’m getting 50% of what I was 2 years ago.
We need to shoot less, develop a broader market for the product or just get used to leaving it on the ground.
