Easter Project

With the longer Easter weekend I’ve finally managed to complete a little project I’ve had in mind for quite a while.

I trained as a welder under a great chap who was a skilled blacksmith and while I’ve not done too much forging, I do like to bits and bobs now and then. I’ve made a small propane forge from a gas bottle, but to be honest it eats gas and has too broad a heat area.

So I thought I’d knock up a coke forge, a bit quieter than the gas one, more manageable heat and I can fire weld In it.

Few shots of the test light this after noon. Tomorrow’s job is to get a tool rack fitted and paint it up.

Well done keep us all updated. I Used to work at a forge and have done a few things in the past. Making a forge has always been on my list of jobs to do but sadly never get the time at the moment. Good luck

This forge is based on one I’ve used in the past, complete with the front and back cut outs for longer pieces.

I’ve made it large enough to take maybe 3 bags of Coke, so there is plenty in there drying out and to make a safe area to leave hot work to cool. Today’s firing used half a bag I had lurking in the shed from when I had a scrolling job on a set of railings and needed a small forge. I made one quickly from an old wheel rim and a hair dryer!

Mrs .308 has requested a nice forged desk ornament, so I can see a leaf and taper pen holder being the first project.

Managed to fire up the forge in anger today, made a coke rake for me, a half horseshoe pen holder for Mrs 308 and started to round up some blank stock for punches.

The young lad from next door came over to see what I was at and forged a bottle opener for his dad and a hoof pick for his mum too.
