Electronic callers

Bought a foxpro earlier this year as got fed up faffing about with the mobile phone as is easier to use with simple on/off once you have chosen which call to make use of, usually simple rabbit distress call or similar.

I have found it tends to work better during mating season and also later on in the season on unsuspecting cubs and young fox that are more inquisitive and unsuspecting, that said I had some adults run in from quite a distance on one permission over a valley that impressed me, they seemed to risk it a little more when under pressure to feed litters.

Not used it this autumn as effectiveness seemed to drop off at back end of summer with wary adults so back to a little baiting and more just sitting and waiting to ambush them at present having also invested in thermal spotter last winter.

Hi mp
I'd recommend the icotec gc500 after having a foxpro, the remote caller has a better range, and spare's should you ever need them are more readily available.
I put the caller about 20 yds to the side of me then start calling, i scan in all direction's as the foxes can come from anywhere.
Some times the fox will come in close or right up to the caller, but this dosent happen often, they will usually stand off between 150-200yds, this is still within range of a centre rifle.
Callers dont work all the time but when they do you can have a result in under 5 minutes, this can be from foxes that come off other land where you dont have permission to shoot.
Between now and January its going to be the "happy hour" as its getting nearer mating season, there allready pairing up round here (not come across anyone that can do a mating call on the back of their hand :D ).
IMO anyone that dosen't have a remote caller is at a disadvantage when shooting foxes ------best £200 spent.

It’s worth also bearing in mind that foxy will usually try to approach the source of the sound from downwind so that he can use his nose as well.

I was a skeptic until I had a conversation with someone who shoots over 800 a year as a pro pest controller, I use a Icotech nightstalker and I have had brilliant results with it over the last 2 years, common mistake is being lazy and putting it out 10 yards because you can't be bothered to walk 80 yards, Playing too loud, I start on 5 let it play for 5 minutes, normally you will have a result by then, if not go up a level for 1 cycle or loop, Try and pick the right call for the conditions, if you have stubble or grass, I have found that a mouse type squeak works best played at a mid volume and reduce as it's coming in, From now until end of February is a great time to use the Vixen in heat call< if no results within 30 mins go to another stand unless you know there's one in your area.

Over the last 2 years I have shot over 200 Foxes all to the call, so It does work, but dont' play too loud for too long.

I use an ICOtech 350 and I use it for a reason. It works ;) Mouse or Rat seem to be the best all round calls. Mating calls are good at the right time but I used to use a little ICOtech 150 that fitted in my pocket that played exactly the same Mouse call, and that unit has teeth marks in it from times when Charlie has rushed in and grabbed the thing ! Had to let one of them run about 80yds before dropping the caller so I could shoot it with no chance of nailing the caller
The only reason I switched to the 350 is the longer range of the remote. I like to have the caller 90 to 100 yds away from me so that as Charlie approaches he's not looking anywhere towards me as I settle the rifle in my shoulder. If the fox is still 100yds from the caller when it pauses to re-assess the situation (as they often do) it means that he's still within 200yds of me whichever way he came from. Anything within 200yds is a dead-thing-walking if I'm waiting with the .204 ;)

that's why I use a mobile, down load any calls and use as the ring tone also range is not a problem.also costs you nothing and you can use a external speaker as well.
phil.
If it is saved as a ringtone you can access it in your phone settings and play it from there, so need for anyone to call you.

Lots of success this year with cub distress, vixen in heat and rabbit call.

Advice from Rob at Best fox call:

so I tend to use rat / mice calls or pheasant distress as my start off calls.

Frightened Bunny is quite a good call.

November - January - Vixen in Heat or the 3bark call work well (mating season)

Spring - Summer - Lamb calls if around lambs - and cub distress calls

Hope that helps
