Elf on shelf!

I’m a pagan really; I love the festival of light. Marking the shortest day of the year (or slightly after it) with a feast is deep rooted in our culture. Traditionally, a cull excess livestock that couldn’t be overwintered on the thin pastures of these Northern European lands. Christian Christmas adds another layer to the midwinter festival, just as it overlays older traditions at Ēostre, and now we’ve added further modern customs on top: Elf on the Shelf in all. Whilst my household does not partake, I enjoy seeing the effort and enjoyment that families get from this.

As a final thought, I love the British climate in December, and with seasonal lag in mind I’d actually suggest moving the secular celebrations into mid-January to brighten the hardest month. Even though it would break the connection to midwinter’s night.
The latter point is a good reason why Up Helly Aa is so popular in Shetland......a good reason to have a few drinks and set fire to a long boat in the depths of winter! Last tuesday in January if you ever want to have a mid winter warm up!

The Hawkstone advent calendar my wife bought me has me interested in the festive season far earlier than normal.

Throw out the the German tree at same time haha. One thing Im not keen on is having to eat a heap of turkey
It's all Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol" and Prince Albert are to blame. Bring back a proper English Christmas with burning a "yule log"...and slaughtering a fatted pig. Except that's what Norse? Anyway if it's morphed into being not a wood log but a chocolate Swiss roll it's OK with me!

Mrs just sent me video of 3 kids discovering advent calendars the elves brought with them. Smiles, jumping (spinning in circles from 4yr old!) and a room full of happiness - place for that in every household imo 😍

Enjoy every moment while it lasts fella, they grow up far too fast.

Too true.
My nephew and nieces mother really goes to town with it , the kids love it.
One is a good elf and one a naughty elf , the naughty elf eats the chocolates from the tree and the kids find him next morning with a fat tummy and empty sweet wrappers 🤣

Bit like that with us, 3 kids so 3 elves - husband wife & a baby elf. The baby elf is always doing daft stuff - and quite often we find him naked!! 😆😆

No kids here so Christmas usually involves a bit of visiting family and a good rest at home with the dogs. We have a family shoot in between Christmas and new year which is a welcome break from the eating at drinking.

I have finally found an advent calendar I’m interested in though.
