I want to put up a steel framed building off the back of my garage to use as a workshop and to house a project I want to start. I am trying to decide whether to go for an off the shelf type or whether to get an engineer to do the calculations needed for building control and build something with a steeper pitch which would match the cross-section of the gable end of my garage. The footprint of the building I want to put up will be 12m x 6m and the garage has a height at the ridge of 6.3m and the pitch of the roof is 45° so I will need to put in a planning application which I am fine with doing myself, but the engineer I used last time for the steelwork calculations for building control last time I did something like this has retired and I don't know anyone else who could do it. I can get the slab done by a local builder and would be happy to put the building up myself. I don't want to go for masonry walls as last time I did this it worked out very expensive as I had to pay someone to lay a lot of blocks and it took ages because of the weather and their other commitments.
My questions are:
1. Has anyone got any experience of building a "bespoke" steel framed building? If so would you do the same again or go for an off the shelf building?
2. Can anyone suggest an engineer who could do the calculations to size the steelwork and to satisfy building control?
3. If you would go for an off the shelf building, can you recommend anyone to supply one?
4. Is an off the shelf building likely to be considerably cheaper than something bespoke?
Thanks for any advice or recommendations you can offer.
