Got a small scooter engine with a side cover behind the generator and flywheel. Paper gasket and has a small oil weep.
Will be fixed eventually but in the meantime what is the oil “ sealer” de-rigeuer ?

Think hylomar/silicone type. It’s an alloy casing.

If you have a flat surface a sheet of 180 paper and give it few cross passes to see if it is flat then seal it.

Narrow bead of any sort of silicon sealer, bathroom type. But leave it to go "off" before you refit the casing.

Threebond 1207b is what you want. You'll have to remove the cover and apply this to the whole sealing face rather than just cover over the leaking area from the outside. It's a standard for sealing motorcycle cases, expecially when there is no gasket and is metal to metal.

Did BSA develop it?

Just to reiterate, this is so I don’t have to remove the cover, which is a big job I don’t have time for. This is to apply externally to stop the leak till I can get it stripped

Nothing will work in that case. The oil is under pressure and will lift the sealant off the surface sooner or later.
Almost always sooner and almost always when you’re far from home.

The pressure at the weep is negligible . It’s caused by a small part of damaged gasket.
The sealant failing isn’t an issue as the oil loss is so tiny

This is a holdover repair till I get time to fully strip the engine down

I doubt it will hold. The multiple hot/ cold cycles with the associated expansion and contraction will suck the oil between the metal and the sealant and break the seal.
You also won’t get adhesion where the oil is seeping, so you start with a weak spot.
On the other hand, what have you got to lose? It’s only a weep. If it was a Triumph or a Norton it would be considered perfectly normal.

Loctite 290. Clean joint area really thoroughly first. Detergent then flood with acetone. A vacuum in the case will assist. eg vacuum cleaner on the oil fill hole and finger over any breather.

What he said. Especially with the vacuum.

Just chuck a couple of inches of blue roll into the filler plug. I can personally attest to its effectiveness at stopping oil 😳🙄

Used Elring Dirko-HT

Cleaned area and put a bead along the case joint
Seams to have stopped the weep in its tracks

Having supply issues with spares for this scooter so this should work until I can get the engine apart.
