Fair chase SA hunts?

Not sure if you are aware but there was an election in '94 and a subsequent change of Govt.

I’d have been 4 at that time! But you feel it’s gone downhill since then? I’ve always thought of SA as one of the more modern and developed countries over there.

Regardless, hopefully a hospital visit isn’t part of the trip but it’s always good to have backup plans

I have visited regularly since 1991. There was huge hope for the country post 1994. Now they joke that you measure rainfall by how much it fills up the potholes in the highways. My last visit was April this year and it was all very sad.
Namibia looks interesting.

That’s fairly depressing!

Fairly is not an accurate description. Country is very close to being a failed state. I deal with it on a weekly basis and return annually for end of financial year meeting. If we did not still have the farm, I would have washed my hands of the country long ago. Difficult giving up on generations of blood sweat and beers.

Anyway, back to your thread.

hi Wildfowler, I think folks prefer Namibia because there is so much more wilderness, less people who seem to be allot happier. There are far fewer high fenced areas with lots of low fences so animals can travel more freely. For me visiting the places I go you have to put more effert into getting your beast. my Eland took all day and the extaction was almost impossible , we got back to the lodge at 9.30 p.m.
I will not start my holiday with the debacle of firearms check in at S.A. done it twice and never again even with the bribes.
Namibia for me in 2024 bow hunt.

Certainly all day for one beast and a late finish is more like it.

I didn’t realize firearms check in was that bad? Is it really that much of a hassle? Namibia is already sounding more appealing. Although it was either a Nyala or an impala that I was keen to try for that I’m fairly sure wasn’t present in Namibia.

Namibia for me, no problems with firearm import and an overnight flight direct from Frankfurt to Windhoek.
The area I hunted was near Etosha, you saw the fence on the way in and on the way out.
Personally I prefer to visit countries that aren’t in the news quite as much as South Africa, quiet is good and Namibia is trying to boost its tourist sector.

If flying via Frankfurt , do your rifles have to be checked in at Frankfurt airport when you land or do they get transferred directly to next flight?

I went via Frankfurt last month. Firearms were transferred automatically, I never saw them until I arrived in Jo’burg.

In my case I had to collect and transfer myself. No problem at all, Germany has a hunters exemption, declared it on entry as a firearm in transit and carried I it to the check in. Flight crew were German, aircraft was Boeing.

Was this Lufthansa ? I would have gone that route but if I read it correctly it was €200 each way for firearms.

We missed our connecting flight to East London the first trip and even with the bribes the second trip was very tight, they just dont give a f***.
I here what you are saying about Nyala and Impala but Namibia has some wonderful Red Hartebeest and the iconic Oryx plus the Springbok in Namibia are much bigger.
If you want Namibia I can recommend at least 2 outfitters. PM me for details.

Never had a problem with firearms in SA and I've been over 20 times. Get all of your paperwork in place correctly and there is nothing to worry about. Alternatively I have a guy who meets people and makes sure there is no hassle, it costs $50 unlike these other companies that charge £150.

Yes, out of Dublin, travelling with a firearm is expensive, it doesn’t seem to matter which airline you use. They wouldn’t check it in for the entire trip because they’d no interline/code sharing agreement with the Namibian airline.
Incidentally there are impala in Namibia, the cheetahs love them.. in the area we were on there were 2 free animals, jackal and cheetah, never saw a cheetah, but I got 2 jackal.

Try Ethiopian next time. I’ve used them the last few trips. A bit of faffing about in the dark bowels of baggage handling in Addis Ababa but it works. No charge for firearms if you’re within your baggage/weight allowance. I think Namibian airlines have folded.

Looks like Lufthansa are doing some runs Frankfurt dct Windhoek,

They do, using their partner Eurowings. They still charge €200 each way. A resident of the Fatherland joined us last week and used a camp rifle because of the cost.
Yeah, last few years I’ve given up on bringing my own .
Which makes it easier for me but feels like giving in😢

@wildfowler.250

I'm a bit late to this thread and I realise that the main thrust of the topic is SA verses somewhere else in the search for somewhere that is not restricted fenced in shooting

I noticed that you mentioned nyala

This chap specialises in nyala I believe

I don't know Spike personally but I used to know the area well - on the banks of the Kafue river

An email enquiry costs nothing
