Fallow deer in East Lothian

Does anyone know where the main concentration of fallow deer is in East Lothian?

A birder friend is wanting to know: he’s trying to use them to work out where the Reeves pheasant is. Someone posted a photo of the pheasant, with fallow deer in the background. So all he knows is that it’s in East Lothian, near some fallow deer, and it’s bothering him…

hi buddy, there used to be a big herd off Fallow in Hopeton estate and I know there were Reeves Pheasant on the ground as I have seen them, but, this was quite a few years ago so im not sure if they are still going about

Never heard of them crossing the A1
Were released at Whitekirk and kinda stayed in that area.
The guy that released them is dead now and I’m not sure who’s doing that place now.

There are fallow south of Penicuik. Sika too, and I think a fair number of people who think they’ve seen fallow that way are seeing sika in summer coat.

The Fallow south of Penicuik all cam from Portmore Estate and can be seen regularly if cut over from Peebles to Gorebridge Road, not sure if they have been hammered back since Portmore sold the high ground to forestry.
I know of a decent sika stag being shot at the back of West Linton last year and are probably further north.
The Red Hind was back at Lothian burn this week too hadn't seen it for a while.

I’ve still not seen the hind at Hillend! Which field is it usually in?

Re. Sika at West Linton - which direction? I once had shape on a trail cam there that I convinced myself was a sika.

Red Hind - Travelling North on A702 and as you come down hill look over to your right it will either be in big bowl field on roadside or in the paddocks between two of the Damhead holdings, it sticks out like a sore thumb.
Sika Stag - it was taken by local farmer on high ground between him and Blyth Bank don't want to name his farm on open forum but if you know area its just off Bogsbank road also Sika regularly on dairy farm at Blyth Bridge too.

Not surprised they’re getting sika in Blyth Bridge - ladyurd plantation is lifting with them.

I’m surprised they’re not seen more often in Deepsyke.

Deepsyke forest is definitely big and thick enough to hide a few, for sure they will have passed through there just not resident. Seen a reasonable clean buck on road side at Deepsyke on Friday on way home.

His so now runs the estate and does most of the stalking. I know the family well.

Never met the son.
Estate ? I actually thought it was a farmer who was involved in the release of Fallow. A certain JG

Think I've seen it on the fields left just before the crest of that hill too?

Glad I've read this, as I thought I was going made - see plenty of roe there, and been thinking something was off with the coat on one of them. But not exactly practical to have a better look at 60 mph on the way to work 😅
