This will throw the cat among the pigeons: £40k a year plus a £10k pension contribution, FFS!
28% employer’s contribution towards a final salary pension!
Why the f**ck do we continue to provide public sector pensions at disproportionate rates ? Why do we provide public sector final salary pensions when almost all organisations have moved to defined contribution?it’s simply unaffordable….

I'll take you up on that Biffo.
It 100% won't be a final salary pension. The std civil service pensions have moved away from those now. Long gone.
I am a Chartered Surveyor in a Govt dept and I've had bugger all pay rises (compared to industry/practice) over the last decade or so. The one thing that has kept me in post on a pittance is the half decent pension.
Frankly, if you strip that out… you won't get anyone to work for the peanuts salary on offer across the majority of the tiers within the civil service.
That, in a nutshell is why the **ck I am going to going to get a pension that makes up for the crap salary. I look forward to claiming next year, but believe me, I wont be rich on it.

You deserve more coz you are a true professional! Hopefully you’ll pick up some valuation/private work etc in your retirement, to add a few pennies back etc ?
However , if you look at the original ad it talks about Defined Benefit Pension….thats a final salary pension.

Pay band 4 is a managerial position. Good job for somebody but I very much doubt there’ll be any stalking. Personally I don’t think the salary is enough, particularly considering the location.
@Hairysausagefingers good luck with your retirement mate. I left the FC just over 10 years ago. Letting go of that pension was a big issue at the time. It took me a long time to earn enough to break even on what I’d left behind.

I’m a civil servant in Scottish Forestry. My pension certainly isn’t a final salary pension. Hasn’t been the whole time I’ve been there since 2014. It’s much worse than it used to be. Still fantastic compared to private sector pensions mind. It, in some ways, makes up for the £20k per year less than I would make in the private sector. I didn’t come for the wage, it’s the terms and conditions (decent holidays, good sick pay etc.) and for the public service.

As a civil servant I can tell you it certainly isn't as good as you think. Still very good compared to private, but the pay is so far off the private sector that it's the main reason people stick around. As others have said, it's the terms that really help, good leave, flexi working, sick pay etc.

Jealously of Government pensions hides the real issue, pensions are either funded out of income (state pension/police etc) or savings.

In the past many retired with good pensions that's been eroded over the years by the actions of both Conservative's and Labour Governments.

Attempts such as the Living Pension need supporting and encouraging.

civil service pensions, like several other UK public sector pensions, are 'pay as you go' (or unfunded). There is no pension (investment) fund. Pensions are instead funded by contributions from current employers and employees, topped up as necessary by the Treasury.
In other words, the contributions are insufficient….and therefore basically unaffordable , which is my real point.
