FC Event, Managing Deer Across The English Landscape, Hampshire, Tues 1st Oct '24

It wasn't that it was as much as £100 that made me ask: more that £99.29 is such a peculiar number!

A strong set of talks though, isn't it. I'd be particularly interested in the RSPB talk, hopefully telling how they present deer management to their membership.

The TB/deer and deer diet talks will be interesting but the total clincher must be the wolf one.

Do you mean there is a stand-up comedy element to lighten the load?

I was very interested in signing up until I noted it kicks off with a thermal use presentation and comes to a head with:

Wolves: Can They Help Control Deer Numbers? – Robin Rigg & Richard Morley

I don't mean that at all.

Most of us are not experts in wolves, so I am hoping this will be enlightening. The data presented in a lynx talk I attended was fascinating. The upshot was in the direction of a lynx reintroduction being unsuitable but research showed that the situation had many more sides to it than many had expected.

I am full of preconceptions about wolves in the UK but I'm looking forward to what I hope will be a presentation reasoned by data.

The Lynx talk at the event last year was interesting, a room full of naysayers, me included came away learning something

I think the Eventbrite fee must make it an odd number possibly

Based on last year they are just covering their costs: speakers and venue

Last years event was good, but they never supplied copies of the presentations!
I'm sure they will this year.

As for others comments on fees: I don't work for the FC, I haven't for 29 years, however I have organised a number of similar events in Deer Management and other sectors and if you take into account:

1. The time spent organising it (FC Deer Officers)
2. The venue hire inc refreshments, serving the lunch, washing up..)
3. The speaker (see below list) costs (hotel, dinner, mileage, fees..)

Then I'd imagine the entry cost will not even cover their costs, they need sponsorship to get them near it
  • Interpreting Thermal Drone Data - Ben Harrower (BH Wildlife)
  • TB & Deer - Peter Green MRCVS (Veterinary Surgeon)
  • Managing Deer on the RSPB Estate - David Morris
  • Deer in England, the last 1000 years? – Professor Naomi Sykes
  • iDeer Project Dr Becks Spake (University of Reading)
  • Deer diet project, Dr Lucie Jerabkova and James Upson (FE)
  • Wolves: Can They Help Control Deer Numbers? – Robin Rigg & Richard Morley
  • Deer Licensing- Dr Rodney Calvert, Natural England
  • Advances in deer management policy, practice and technology in Scotland– Doug Knox FLS

Looks a good set up but the cost will keep many who the industry is trying to reach from attending. I think we need to remember that its is the industry that needs us. The last but not leaset might be better served north of the border (Were it will be free :stag: )

Nick that's the only way to get the working man to turn up. So if your audience is the few who have then charge. But if you are trying to educate the working class on best practice and other deer management up dates then government need to pay.
