Feeding raw and kibble ?

My lab pup is 7 month old been feeding skinners field and trail puppy food as that’s what breader had him on. Was thinking of still keeping kibble but adding a small amount of raw food in with his kibble. Reason for this as he’s a grazzer if just kibble on its own but if I add dish he will eat it all in one go.

So can any one advise me if they have done this bc and if it’s ok for him ?

Lots of mixed info online was thinking 80/20 kibble raw

Thanks

Be content with a grazing lab, it will pay dividend in later life!
Seriously, as long as he is not losing weight, I'd stick to the kibble. Certainly until 18mth as it is balanced. Home made can be tricky with growing pups. What I would advise is making changes to the brand here and there to get his gut accustomed to a variety of foods. Expect him to have very variable poo until at least 18 months

If you are feeding raw, made sure you know it's provenance - ie your own supply.

Hunger is the best sauce.

All of my dogs have been fed twice a day, more frequently when pups, and the food is removed after five minutes if any is uneaten. If they don’t eat that’s no issue, the food goes away, but they learn very quickly. They are very active so have good appetites. The minute you start pandering to them it is the start of a slippery slope. Be that food, behaviour, or temperament.

I feed our two Podenco raw (used to feed Natural Instinct, now Bella & Duke) We used to feed my working lab', and our whippet the same, and they thrived on it. My beloved old girl I lost at 14 &1/2, and our old whippet made 16. If you can feed a balanced raw diet, it's the only way!

I feed a good amount of venison to my dogs / dog always have . The main part is high quality kibble ( some kibble is rubbish ) Most of the venison is raw but if you feed a fair amount of plain venison the dogs will end up with the squits ! Go easy
To keep fit dogs and absoloutely staight raw meat and such in a ballanced diet is tough and then there is all the work you have to put in

Not sure if you found the same, but I noticed our dogs whenever I gave them venison cubes it would come back up within 10 minutes.

Regardless.... if you fancy giving them a bit of venison I would always recommend mince! no matter how small cubed.... always comes up. 🙃

I used to feed ours on “brown balls” of pretty high quality, however for last 15 years I have mixed fresh, high quality wet and brown balls and have had more enthusiastic eaters and no skin problems and general bouncing good heath. We had a breeder who swore by raw chicken wings that started me off. My best food is cheap fatty “human” beef mince mixed with minced chicken wings and whatever offal is available, liver and kidneys cheap in Tesco. I mix with cooked, chopped up sad looking veg and fruit from bottom of fridge and cod liver oil. I try and bag up 14 1kg bags and freeze it and use one a day. I think most of what is in dry food is crap and my mix does them better.

Of all the dogs i have fed venison none of them struggled . I am talking 1 GWP and a series of Labs . if i feed it too regular any dog will get the runs . Ok its mainly labs and it likely never be any other breed . I have seen an odd full size rabbit go down the hatch on occasions and even with those events no Puking or runs

Our lab didnt like the combo of kibble and venison so went 100% raw. Puppy raw meals then adult. Aside from two meals a day of raw, he has veni bones, trim and fresh kidneys / heart / liver when out stalking. Vet loves to see him as teeth great, shiny coat and great shape (they see plenty of obsese labs). Consistent weight and fit as a flea

Our three are on kibble with approx. 30% raw, sometimes a boiled egg / raw mince / or suitable human food. If I give them venison I flash fry it or the Bernese in particular gets the sh1ts really bad. Although they all enjoy it.

No kibble here for alot of years now, Tripe, chicken, beef, offal, eggs, bones and some oats now and then.
I will often throw a venison rib cage on the grass for the dogs to do whatever with

As Camodig, I haven't fed kibble in 10+ years now and I wouldn't go back.

My three will eat just about anything and have been raw fed since they were 8 weeks old. When I picked my pointer up, I was feeding him strips of venison I'd shot that morning (it was in the back anyway). Only ever get stomach issues when I've cocked up somewhere and not got their food out as I should have so they end up with too much meat and not enough bone or vice versa.

It's all about the balance and once you find it, you can't just leave it. You need to make small adjustments based on how the dog reacts.

Ours gets venison minced fine with kibble, about 50/50 which helps save feed costs. Store my mince frozen in 500g vac packs, defrost one every 3 days. I add all the offal (heart, liver, lungs, kidneys, fat) in to the mix when I don't fancy for myself. Stir the mince with a good amount of water to break it up nicely so it coats the kibble well. We have a not-super hungry lab and she's a big fan of this. Add a bit of salmon oil for her coat.

I would never feed kibble ever again. Just like the human food industry, anything manufactured is just manufactured poison. Whole wild game cant be beaten. I mean whole too. Not skinned, not minced, offal, heads, feet, the lot. That diet will give the dog everything he needs.

My teckles have a good quality kibble and 20% raw rabbit / memorial they thrive on it in a mince meat form only - no bones just meat. They’re lean and very strong dogs
