Feeding times?

Hi,
What time of day and how often do you feed your dogs?
Does it make a difference if they are big dogs or small?
Our 2 old Jack/Mancs sometimes want food early morning and other days they won’t eat until the PM.
The 2year old Border brings an empty bowl and dumps it on the floor at your feet when she’s hungry.
Tummies on two older dogs never been a problem but the Border gets upset tummy every few weeks.
She goes quiet and doesn’t eat for a day and then she’s back to her lively self.
Sometimes there’s been signs of blood in her poop and we’ve had her to the vet a couple of times.
Prescribed something to settle her tum, this works but so does doing nothing.
Vet says scans might show something.
We’ve tried several different foods and yesterday all 3 had roasted chicken and a few dry biscuits….there was some loose poop on the carpet this morning but as 2 dogs slept downstairs last night we don’t know the offender.
All three had loose poops on their morning walk. I didn’t think chicken would do that.
Wifey got some what free biscuits yesterday so we’ll give those a go for the Border.
Ken.

Personally twice 6 and 6. It always used to be once, but that was pure working dogs who worked all day and slept at night on a full tum.

Can't answer the Border question, it could be a grumbling pancreatitis so a low fat food is needed, but I'd be guessing without seeing her. It could be a bit of colitis in which case chappie usually sorts them out. I wouldnt worry about poo consistency, but being subdued is a sign there's something hurting

I mix up feeding times , I dont want my dogs learning how to tell the time and making a din etc . 1 meal , 2 or 3 ? They will still eat it and not worry its not arrived at x time , its easy to slip up with walk times and feeding times and end up with a demanding or noisy dog

First cocker was once a day at the start of the day.
Sometimes he would leave it to the following day with no ill effects.

Second cocker fed 1/2 portion first thing and then 2nd portion at tea time.
Wolfs the food down so fast that when a friend had popped in to feed her, he commented he’d never seen a dog eat their grub so fast.🤣

When ever one of ours is out of sorts ER in doors dishes out chicken and rice usually sorts them out or a trip to the Vitinree. Regular feeding and they do know the times?

BC.

I give a wet feed in the evening, warm in cold weather and they have constant access to dry kibble and water in the kennel

Because I think it's good for carnivores to have a gut cleanout day.
Wild carnivores don't eat every day. They hunt, gorge themselves, then fast until the next successful kill.
When do they get to gorge and spend the day lobbing around just snoozing, farting and digesting?
Wild carnivores do quite a lot of that when they have the chance.
I’m partial to it myself on special occasions.

Yeah ? I could not leave most dogs i have kept with constant access to food , they would just gorge themselves and it would likely end up with a vet trip .
Maybe one or two i have had in my whole life with dogs would ignore the chance to pig out on an epic scale

If that’s the way you keep them, that’s what you get.
I start them as weanling pups, wet feeds 3-4 times a day but nuts always in the bowl.
As the wet feeds reduce I still leave the dry feed available. They get used to having dry food always available but look forward to the wet feed.
I’ve taken in a few older dogs too, within a week they adapted and were eating when they like and not pigging out.
I have very little experience of Labradors, I specialise in the more intelligent breeds, pointers and HPR breeds plus the odd German Shepherd.
Your mileage may differ, especially with labs…they are definitely fat bastids and can’t be trusted.
Have a nice day :tiphat:

Labradors , less intelligent ? Don't be silly, Look at the Jobs they do and how they have become the worlds favourite working and pet dog ! They do in fact have a greedy gene ( genuine ) . BTW the worst food gourger I had was a GWP it found a sack of feed and had a good go at stuffing the lot Did a good few KG !

Breakfast 0800 ish then 1900-2000 for tea. If one of them is out with me on a long day or stalking Scotland, something in the middle or a bit of liver if successful morning stalk
