Firearm Moderator on eBay

I hope someone is able to inform whoever is trying to sell a moderator as a 'muzzle brake' on eBay that it is actually a licensed firearm in the eyes of the law.

Whilst I don't think sound moderators should be licensed items, they are for the time being and the seller is taking a huge risk, perhaps unknowingly!

Is it for an air rifle.?


This came on a air rifle I used to own.

It is a Sako Soundbiter Model rated up to .22 LR

Camo is a smooth tape not dipped.

Thread is 1/2 inch UNF.

Posted 2nd class signed for.

I recently bought a SAK moderator for one of my air rifles. No issues!
The fact it also fits two of my .22 rimfire is by the by.
So technically as long as they guy is informed it’s for an air rifle, then there are no problems.
What the new owner does thereafter is beyond the sellers control

Got the exact same mod (not in camo though) on my .22LR. Good little mod, slim and easy to strip.

Yes, "air rifle" mods can be bought and sold off ticket but you can get into trouble if you fit it to your rim or centre fire.
I was told by Jacksons any mod can be bought if the intended use is an air rifle.

ALthough I am pretty sure mine is proofed or has some markings on it that suggest that is the case. Cannot be bothered to get it out but I guess this could be an air rifle mod. Not convinced though. Would be interested to see what was under the camo tape

There's been controversy about mods like that for a long time. I've had conversations with a few RFDs in my area who have had comments from our FLO about not selling them for use on air rifles but it's not illegal to do so if intended use is non-ticket air.

No that's not correct if fitted to a 22lr then it needs to go on a Fac if it's fitted to air rifle then no.

My rfd said I could have a parker hale non proofed moderator for £25 for airgun use or the same one with a proofstamp for £XX more for if I was to put it onto a .22lr while touching his nose in an Arthur Daly way "know what I mean".

Weird though, the photos appear to illustrate powder residue. That is unless clean air and a small lead projectile lead to the kind of grey build up the photos illustrate?
