First muntjac buck with new rifle

This morning I headed to a woodland in the Forest of Dean. The hope was to cross paths with some fallow or boar before the deer season comes to an end.

Left the house at 6am just as the darkness was fading and the dull sun light was breaking the clouds. With a short journey to said location the heavens opened just as I pulled into the gate way. Last swig of coffee and we are off. Gun check, bolt check, magazine check. Closed bolt and inserted magazine, rifle safe! Walked over trying not to get soaked but trying not to make too much noise. With a short walk I arrived at the woodland gate, opened the gate, walked through before closing behind me. Bolt lifted, pulled back, 6.5 is inline, bolt forward safety on. As I put the safety on I subconsciously looked over left my shoulder, felt like something was behind me. Lo and behold, two muntjac in some thick cover walking out, they noticed me, stood there not knowing who or what I was. They soon bolted, they ran into the plantation where I thought I lost them and thought it was game over. I crept forward 6meters to where I looked over the brow of the bank, stood there was 3 muntjac. I grabbed my rifle, planted the sticks into the ground where I gently placed the rifle on top. I saw this buck stood broad side, the shot was on! I pulled the cross hairs down to line up against its lower shoulder.

BANG reload! I was still on it, now covering the munty ready to recover with a second shot if needed. Luckily 10 minutes passed, it was down and out. I crept around the corner a bit too eager where another munty stood there on egg shells, saw me and bolted into the thick cover never to seem again.

The 6.5prc is very punchy especially against muntjac. Vapourised it’s heart and lungs.

Dead is dead and this rifle will be a good contender against some strong stags.

Hopefully have some more luck tomorrow morning.
