Filled in the application for my grand daughter a 14yr old, she had a family friend vouch for her. Missus paid the fee, all sent off to Surrey Police last year. Heard nothing for months then when I was at my rifle club, the Hon Sec was waiting for a visit from the 'FEO' turned out to be our man and not the Metropolitan as I thought, it was a hand over to be more cost effective. No issues there then. I asked him if my grand daughter's application was on it's way? He checked his diary and said,''After he has visited her at home and also it was fine if I was there' He could see no problem' Three Days later the visit all done. I asked, 'How long for it to come through'. 'About 2 weeks' says he, Great! This was the first week of February 2018' I phoned up Surrey yesterday 26-March. She still had not received it say's I.Explained to them who I was and the time that had elapsed to be asked,Why was I asking and not my Grand daughter? Well I replied,'Not only is she 14 years old, but she was at school today! The upshot of this story is that it is 'ON' the desk ready to post off second class, Should be delivered in time for the week end. Not bad I suppose? Of course it is all my fault for not taking the time to make the phone call sooner. And would you believe I passed the HQ on a journey today, but an appointment has to be made, you just can not call in to collect.... We shall wait in anticipation. I wonder? What issue date it will be given?
Of course I will let you know.

I appreciate this topic is a little old now but I thought I’d share my experiences of an application for a child in a different jurisdiction.

I applied for my 12 year old son’s SGC who lives in Scotland and I live in Sussex. I decided to apply for a couple of reasons; firstly Si he becomes more accountable for his shooting and secondly to open up different ranges, like Bisley, that demand licenses to shoot clays (and any other shooting falling out with s11).

The police officer concerned was very helpful (Police Scotland appear still to be using uniform to deal with applications) and was positive about my son being more accountable for his own shooting.

The only real difficulty was with the GP. After several attempts to contact her and even more to explain this wasn’t air gun application.

The timings weren’t too bad; a friend of mine making an initial application in the Met took more time and had far greater issues with accessibility of the FEO.

Remember when I got my first shotgun certificate.
You could buy a shotgun out of your mums mail order catalogue and store the gun under the bed or even in the shed!

Remember the Baikal single-barrel? £49 to you, Sir!

I used to buy cartridges from our local hardware shop, too. 'GP Turbo' they were called, and it cost me the princely sum of £2.50 for 25 bought loose from a bulk box and packed into a brown paper bag, lol. Wasn't long after that the Baikal Rekord cartridges became available, too. Bloody hell, they were a noisy lot

I did exactly that in 1975. Bought a double Baikal for £4 a month over 12 months
