First time Mauser

I originally bought an RPA Hunter in 243 as I had never had a custom grade rifle and wanted to see how it stacked up against my other 243, a Tikka T3 Hunter, well the rifle was obviously well built and this showed in the weight of it, unfortunately due to operations on both arms this meant it wasn’t a keeper so due to the fact I was looking for a replacement that my wife could handle for use on her DSC1 I started to look for another T3 or an earlier M series Tikka, but I then phoned Ed from Edinburgh Rifles ( top bloke) and have ended up buying a Mauser M18 in 243 that has had little more that a box through it from new along with the Freya & Devik F280 mod that’s been on it from new for second hand Tikka money, effectively I’ve bought it blind in terms of never having tried a Mauser, so from those of you that have, how do you find them?

Hi,i have m12 max and couldn't be happier extremely lite very well designed and shoot as any top notch rifles. In fact it fits me so well that if barrel gone South one day i will get the same one again

Got a M12 Impact in .243, a very 'handy' rifle - short, light, good stock (synthetic in my case), good 3-position safety, flush-fitting double-stack magazine. I have to say I checked it against the M18 and preferred the M12, but I'm sure you'll be happy.

I have an m12 in 308 and m18 in 243. Love them both. Very accurate solid, usable rifles. M12 has better trigger but nowt wrong with the m18. Mine won’t be going anywhere for a long time fingers crossed 😉

I have a Mauser M12 Extreme , 300 win Mag, very accurate rifle even with the recoil of the .300 , all my other rifles are Tikkas T3 , so I have had to get used to the 3 way safety on the Mauser. Good rifles 👍👍

thanks for the replies chaps, have you settled on a factory load or do you roll your own ?

I have m18 in 243 and really like it. You can adjust the trigger to lighten it. Usually shoot Federal 100 gn but have used various without any major drama including the Fox 80gn lead free. It groups well and I can get 1/2 MOA at 100 yds on a good day.

That’s what I was hoping to hear, Ed has said he tried a 270 with several factory loads and they were all under an inch, have you found a use for the compartment in the stock yet, is it big enough to store a spare mag ?

Might fit a sandwich on there just in case you get peckish but to be honest until I read your post I’d forgotten it had one!!

Picked up the m18 today, on first scan it is very impressive, well made, well finished and looks to be very well put together, just need to see how it shoots.
I bought it from Ed at Edinburgh Rifles, he said it’d had very little use and he wasn’t wrong, it is as described “mint”
I’d happily buy again on the strength of his word.
Thanks again Ed 👍

Happy with my M18 in 243. Mine groups well with sako 90 g sp and Hornady sst 58g. I had a few issues with grouping when I first got it due to putting too much pressure on the stock when shooting , sending bullets all over the place . Now I’ve learnt how to shoot it properly I love it

What were you doing wrong out of interest? I’m thinking of buying at M18 in 243 too

I have an M12 max in 308, absolutely love it, nice and light for us girls, accurate and not fussy on rounds, I've used Federal powershock 150, Sako hammerhead 150 and Hornady Whitetail 150 not much difference I any of these really. Your wife should be pretty happy with it.

Just hanging on the stock too much. I had a bipod with a right handed bias so to correct this (because I’m left handed) I was twisting the stock to get it in the right position if that makes sense.
