Fjallraven G-1000 products/waxing

I just wanted to explain my own personal experience with some G 1000 products and see if they marry up with other peoples. Or maybe I’m doing something wrong?

I have a pair of Barents trousers, which in nearly every way are great - very hard wearing, decent pockets et cetera. They are too noisy for Woodland stalking but there you go!

My only real complaint about them is the waxing process/results. I have tried many times using the Fjallraven wax to re-wax the trousers to make them as water resistant as possible. (I note that they have change their explanation of water resistance and waxing on the website since I bought the trousers a few years ago).

I have followed the rewaxing instructions, seen how others have been doing it on YouTube, and tried some of my own methods, however all without real success. The trousers of course become very stiff after waxing, which is to be expected, but in terms of water resistance I find it only lasts perhaps only 10 mins before it is next to useless - a stiff trouser which is very damp / wet.

I was told once that this method of waxing isn’t supposed to work in the UK, rather in areas with very low humidity and sub zero temps. In these places, apparently, the subzero temperatures and low humidity serve to freeze the wax in the trousers making them impervious to wind and water, that’s making the product very effective. I may have missed remembered the event, but this may have been by the UK importer of Fjallraven products???

As an experiment, I have waxed one leg of another pair of Barents trousers with Barbour wax and one leg with Filson wax. Interestingly both of these seem to be more effective than the G 1000, so I don’t think it’s necessarily wax in general that doesn’t work. The Filson wax seems to totally repel the water, the barber seems to soak it up a little but seems to be still dryer in the G 1000.

Sorry for the long post, I’m keen to hear if other peoples experiences are similar, or if anyone has found a decent workaround to make these trousers more water resistant than they are.

Thank you in advance!

For waterproofing, and/or added warmth I use the Fjallraven Barents Pro trousers with the hydratic lining. The standard Vidda Pro trousers I only wax the seat and knee double reinforcements for a bit of added protection and accept they will get wet if it rains - but also dry very quickly.

Two good applications of wax, Fjallraven or homemade, with heat from a hairdryer to get it to soak in, seem to last a decent time and keep the water out.

Do you find the lining makes the trousers sweaty?

I bought a second hand g1000 jacket a few weeks back and have waxed it specifically for stalking, £35 so can’t complain! However I’ve yet to use it as the weather has been so nice, I have heard the Greenland was isn’t very good though. If it turns out to be the case I’ll be switching to Barbour wax.

I only tend to wear the lined trousers (and jackets) at the cooler times of the year, so no, not under those conditions. Summertime it’s the partially waxed Vidda Pros - horses for courses really.
