Forestry Commission, Woodland Management plans and so on

Thought I'd ask the group about something that has cropped up on a permission I have. The landowner wants to have a Woodland Management Plan done. He also wants to apply for some grants for various things - tree planting etc and also deer management incl. fencing etc. He's messaged me with the following:

"My online browsing suggests the forestry commission require us to have a deer management plan to get our woodland plan. The deer management plan looks like the FC require us to get 3 quotes and then they choose who writes it????? Not sure if impact survey therefore also has to be their choice ??"

The person allegedly writing the WMP isn't being overly communicative so they asked me as I stalk there and keep a lid on deer numbers. TBH the deer are fine - some roe, occasional muntjac and rare sika. Population seems to be stable and healthy. This all came up because I suggested we do a Deer Impact Survey so that they can see for themselves and monitor the effects of the deer as they go along. Fortunately they are both lovely folk and have a keen interest in the woodland (recently acquired) and managing it for environmental, rather than commercial, reasons.

I've not come across the FC wanting three quotes and then deciding who the punter has to use? However, I said I'd put the question to the SD forum and see if anyone else has come across this!
Any advice, as ever, gratefully received.
Cheers

Is your land owner getting confused with the capital grant side, of the countryside stewardship grant scheme which will require quotes this could be for fencing.
So far all we have been asked for is a woodland management plan plus the associated paperwork for felling a license, a deer management plan along with records of culls and an impact assessments done at 3-5 year intervals, how and by who is up to you.
All the quoting is for the capital grants for the extra deer fencing and exclosure plots.
My suggestion would be your land owner has a quick chat with their Natural England advisor or the FC woodland officer who will probably say speak to our deer officer, or spend a couple of quid and have a bit of agent time to ensure they are on the right track as the new schemes are not as simple as they used to be with out any wiggle room, and if there's an excuse to have some money back they will.
Feel free to pm if you'd like a chat I'm involved in quite a few of these.

On the plus side if they are you can ask to be paid to do the job because that's what the grant is for. To help with costs of deer management.
