Foxing set up

A few years ago I treated myself to a Sako Varmint in 22 250 with a 20" barrel and I know everyone tells me you need at least 24" to really get the best out of the calibre. No fox under 250yrds has ever told me it lacks 150fps !!. One thing I will say is that it's very handy in the truck and still is more than 350fps faster and a lot more flatter than the same gun in 223 and at night every inch helps !!

I have a 20” 22-250 and I was out yesterday morning doing a bit more load testing, it’s looking pretty comfortable at a touch over 3700fps for a 50gr Vmax so really don’t need to worry about what those extra 4” might have produced, it still turns foxes inside out.

shorter barrels can be transposed with a faster powder , many did this when we started with moderators and the shorter barrels via chopping , re threading . Remember is about 2 decades ago now and rifles come to the shop screw cut as the norm ! Wonder how much RFDs with a lathe and a bit of know how made out of that gig ?

What powder are you using ?

CFE223, not ideal for 50gr but all I could get hold of. I’ve got some 55gr Blitzking to try but they may not stabilise.
So far I’ve got the grouping down to between 1/2 & 3/4” which is pretty close to what I get from Norma 50gr Vmax for an almost identical MV with 39.4gr and Fed 210M primers. I tried running them a bit hotter but started to get a stiff bolt lift so will stick with that.

If i was going for another 22/250 i would want a 24 inch barrel again. To get the best out of it.

In real terms performance. And ranges you will likely shoot out to when lamping etc. Does the 24 inch barrel have any real advantages probably not.

Also look at most of the shooting you do. On foot ? If so do you want a heavy long barreled rifle. It didn't bother me as such . Because I use to shoot off the jeep bonnet alot of the time or sat up overlooking the fields with with the bipod and fox caller.

As for 204. Never owned one. But seen them put to good use.
