On a local Freecycle forum page some person is requesting Frogs or spawn for his pond I sent a message to the moderators who have not replied telling them it is illegal to do what he wants as they are protected by law , I have replied back to the poster telling him to remove his post as the request is illegal, he has now come come and asked why so I said ring the local
Police on 101 and ask for the Wildlife officer explain your intentions and expect a visit and if caught a big fine and possibly court, his answer can I take just a small amount, are people so thick.

Unfortunately some people simply don't know the law and will not be told!
And I'll bet that they are the very same people who want to go banging on about wildlife conservation! :banghead:

Wildlife and Countryside Act is where all of this is contained. Its something any shooter shoot have a working knowledge of, along with the Firearms Act.

Simply put, it is an offence to interfere with any wild animal, fish or bird, their eggs, their young, their nests or dens unless your activity falls with closely defined exceptions.

“The four widespread species of amphibian, the smooth and palmate newts, the common frog and common toad, are protected only by Section 9(5) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. This section prohibits sale, barter, exchange, transporting for sale and advertising to sell or to buy. Collection and keeping of these widespread amphibian species is not an offence.”

I did find myself thinking that if the pond in question was good enough.....toads and frogs would find their way there quite naturally. When you see frog/toad spawn appearing in any old splash or puddle, our amphibious friends are a bit more adventurous than we give them credit for!

This guy came a t(o)ad early the other day:

I’m guessing he’d been tuning into the BBC’s global warming propaganda…

At least he had the good sense to head back to hibernation home for another snooze, I could see his tracks next day in the snow, going back a yard and down a wee hole back to the same damp water-spring glaur from whence he emerged.

Next you’ll be suggesting keeping sticklebacks in jars too!!!

My! That takes me back! Locally we kids (in Perth) incorrectly called them 'minnows' (actually, more accurately something like 'minners').

The public park at Scone (a village just north of Perth) had a large magnificent pond full of banks of chickweed and suchlike and was a magnet every spring for thousands of frogs and toads, so we boys would take a bus from town on Saturdays to collect spawn, tadpoles, and try to get a glimpse of the newts that inhabited it. Happy days.
