The current licensing system for the release of pheasants and red-legged partridges on and around certain Special Protection Areas (SPAs) in England is currently being reviewed by Defra as the risk of the occurrence of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in wild birds in Great Britain has dropped from medium to low. Ideally, the outcome of the review will be that all SPAs are covered by general licence GL45 removing the need for individual licences to applied for.
