I’m trying to gauge interest from the stalking / foxing community to see if there is interest in a steel plate shooting competition in the future

The idea loosely based on the “find the target, range it or work out the distance, shoot it principle”

Several stages with one, two or three targets per stage

Change of position and mag within the stage on some stages

Timed but enough to allow a change of mag or replenish internal mag

Maybe 80 rounds max

Distance - close to 800 mtrs

I’ve spoken with a lot of clients who have expressed interest in attending steel plate comps but are put off by perceived necessity for dedicated rifle and obvious expense incurred

This type of comp would allow the use of normal stalking / fox killing rifle

I voted yes and would like to see some variety in use of sticks and bipods and offhand, possibly some compulsory configurations would allow for this.

Going to let this run and see what comments and ideas are forthcoming as I’d like YOUR input to make something that’s sustainable and attractive for repeat events

Thank you for the comments and votes so far

Well does that mean I can shoot my non-bipodded P-Hale m81 in .30-06 from the Hawkins position?

I like the sound but dread to think what my barrel would do after 80 rounds. It only takes 4 to heat up and move significantly.

Pretty sure participants need target shooting authorisation/condition on their FAC...

Great idea but afraid travel distance to your neck of the woods would rule it out for me unless it was maybe run over a weekend with suitable secure accommodation to enable travel & overnight.

Very popular type of event is SA where typical course of fire would be 5 targets per 'stand' with a mixture of 1 MOA & 0.5 MOA targets plus one silhouette, typically the head of a quarry species.

Shooting positions vary & including off the back of a 'buckie' (spelling?), from behind a log which can be used for support but which is exactly the wrong height, using a shooting tree, tractor or plant tyre, etc. - backstop is a spoil heap from one of the local gold mines!

Top tip for target fixing is use a length of old fire hose or nylon webbing to hang the 'gong' as a bullet hitting it will pass through leaving the gong hanging as intended rather than a chain which once broken needs to be fixed. Weld bolts to the back of the gong, punch holes in strap & fix with large washer & nut.

Perhaps also a side event for .22LR?? - out to, say, 300m.

Probably easier to add a "hunter" class to the send it series at gardners. I think the GBPRA have a hunter class and possibly PRS UK may have one to but I'm sure Andy or James would sort something if there's enough interest. So between those 3 that's Cumbria, North Wales and South Wales covered and looks like Bisley is getting in on the act to.
For those who don't know have a look at precision rifle shooting on YouTube, hunter class is basically the same thing but rules tailored more for lighter sporting rifles and internal mags.
