Giving up my job

I've been a professional bricklayer, mason and general builder for over 30 years, but I've had enough. It's not the job, it's the industry. It's a mess.

I've got four jobs waiting to start. A chimney rebuild, a roof repair, a garden wall and a large retaining wall. I can't get any of them under way. I've been trying for six weeks to source bricks for the retaining wall. I can't get any builders merchant to confirm what bricks they can supply, when they can get them of how much they'll cost. They list umpteen types of brick on their websites but have none of them in their yards. When I ask what they can supply and at what price, it's: leave it with us we'll get back to you. They never do. Emails go unanswered while the customer is chafing wondering when I'm going to start. If I do manage to source materials the price is not that agreed on the terms of my trade account. They can be double and I'm working at a loss.
The chimney job I could have squeezed in before the retaining wall. Chimney rebuilds can be good little earners if you're prepared to put your back into it. I can earn £1500 and more a week rebuilding chimney stacks. But I need bricks, and I need scaffolding. I've spent the best part of a week trying to find a scaffolder who'll survey the job and give me a price. I know roughly what it should be but it's an awkward one that needs a site visit. I know from experience that not all scaffolders will want it and that prices can vary widely. Most don't answer the phone at all, return calls or respond to messages.
I've tried every scaffolder I can find in the local area from every listing source I can think of and I've asked friends within the trade if they can know of anyone I haven't heard of. Of the twenty odd I've tried to contact, five picked up the phone. none would commit and invariably it was: "sorry mate I'm driving now. Text me the address and you number and I'll get back to you when I'm home". None have and when I ring again the next day I get no answer. There is no one left to phone.

I need buff bricks for the chimney job. And they can't be any old crap that someone just happens to have kicking about in their yard (if they've got any at all). They have to be the right grade and an acceptable colour match as it's an old building. I've tried all the major builders merchants without success. Again, they carry no stock and they never get back to me about what they can supply.
I tried a small independent yard a couple of miles from the job. Told them what I needed and asked them to let me know what they could supply. They said they'd look into it and email a list of options. They haven't and they won't.

I haven't worked for a month. I've spent God knows how much on diesel running around. I've wasted day after day on the phone or the internet trying to source materials, while my customers are getting ****ed off.

Everyone tells me they can't get tradesmen for love nor money. I can see why now. I've had enough of it. I hate this industry, it's populated by fools.

Can you not source recycled bricks for some of the work where it is old properties?

You've obviously got a big materials supply issue at your end of the country which I hope you can get sorted.
Have you got lot's of new build sites going on locally?
I've been employing a brickie for the last 4 month's, and luckily we've managed to keep him going with materials even though the builders merchants promised me the earth at the start of the build, I've had to read them the riot act a couple of times for delays.
Scaffold is done by the son in law and I've had a few delays with him striking job's not erecting them, as he is so busy.

Out of interest our brickie lives in Devon and commutes up every Monday morning to the home counties for a weeks work, and he's been doing that for well over a year now as we don't have much of a material supply problem here, just a "skilled" trades shortage.

common it other industries too, car parts in short supply, then shooting we all know the issue with primers, powder etc etc.

Sorry to hear this mate it's not good.

Just checked your location and see your from my neck of the woods.

I'm in the trade and have a reliable scaffolder so can pass on there details if you like.

Round my way bricks are well stocked in jt atkinson and there is a guy in there who is very knowledgeable on them and is always good to ask.

Things do seem to have went a bit wayward since covid for sure.
Been on my own for just over 20 years and pretty much subby non stop so everyone else get these headaches and the few jobs I do take on direct are because they are going to be low maintenance to organise.
Enjoy the job and the income even at it's worst is outstanding for the hours.

Sounds like the Op needs a full time Administrator to do all this chasing. Down here (The South) it’s finding an available and competent tradesperson. My chosen blacksmith is rammed until November and I placed my order in April!

But guess that’s nothing compared to a full custom rifle build by the likes of PRS.

I feel your pain and frustration.

Things that you took for granted 4 or 5 years ago are now either non existent or harder to source.

I believe a lot of the brick makers are owned by the big builders so everyone else goes wanting. My son is just winding up two years as an apprentice brick layer, from his experience it sounds utterly cut throat in small building so good luck to you in your future.

I got out of the building trade around 5 years ago just as it all started going tit's up.i was lucky with materials really as most of my work was heritage and most of it had to reused.i
as for tradesmen,I wanted an oil change on my wife's and my car £120 labour to drop the oil and change the filters.
2 weeks waiting list,so fcuk it I did it myself in an hour.

Thank you. One scaffolder did respond since posting and I'm meeting him on site tomorrow, though I'm still left with a brick supply issue. But if that blows a fuse I'll be in touch.

What nightmare for you. I hope you manage to get matters sorted, it ain't no fun when things run like that.

Walk away Finchy, after three week they won't remember you, after four weeks you won't give a monkeys, but I'll bet you'll never miss a minute. Enjoy your retirement. I do.👍

Imagine what’s it like if you are not in the trade! And endless stream of charlatans and con-men promising the world At ridiculous prices and delivering nothing, roll on the next recession (next year?) when people are looking to win work again …

I will say - I find the building trade a nightmare to deal with - I have good friends in it and they laugh when I tell them what I expect from a tradesperson…it’s almost a bit of a joke as they expect to Sean about and never answer calls, e-mails….

I had a loss of plot at an architect when building a project as I’d asked him about 7 times for info on drains and he kept robbing it off - then when it came to tying the rainwater drains in the builder said he had no idea where they were going….it was extremely disappointing to have to lose the plot with the guy but it did get things sorted.

I found the whole project to be way more stressful than it needs to be - and I will say the team were excellent for building trade - but coming from another industry it was like a goat rodeo to watch…from a planning, materials and HSE point of view…

Best of luck with your dilemma.

Regards,
Gixer

My scaffolder I had lined up for a site visit tomorrow morning texted me at 11:00 tonight to cancel. I replied telling them to ram it and I've messaged the client with my sincere apologies to tell him I can't do his job. I'm done with this place. Full of "canny lads" who are actually full of shite. never a straight answer, never a promise kept. And when you see them in the pub it's ya a'right Jim, been grafting, are ya full o busy, when they know ****ing well I'm not and they think it's funny. Done with it. house going back on the market tomorrow.
