Gloucestershire renewal & Medcert

I have just completed my latest FAC & SGC renewal, my first time with the new medical certificate process, and I can honestly say it has been an absolute pain in the arse. Back in November my FEO sent me a letter advising me that I needed to get the medical certificate under way.

Within a week I had spoken to my doctors surgery and they had told me in no uncertain terms "on your bike, we will not complete the form". So I got onto Medcert, filled out their online form, and waited, and carried on waiting. After 2 months I started chasing up the report as the clock was starting to tick towards the renewal date. Kat at Medcert could not have been more unhelpful if she tried, she would not provide a clear update, provide a completion date or advise what the hold up was.

As we progressed into February I gave up emailing and moved onto phoning them. Speaking with Kat at Medcert was an exercise in futility, never giving a straight answer, but promises to phone me back with an update and then forgetting to do either. I eventually I managed to speak to Caroline (due to Kat being on holiday) who understood my slight feeling of frustration as I now had 2 weeks till my renewal date, and had not been able to kick off any of the process, and she got me a my medical certificate through in about 3 hours.

Completion of the renewal online was only the usual level of painful. As I had submitted my renewal so late (to the point where I had received a letter from the licensing team advising me to dispose of my firearms as I had not renewed) I expected that I would be waiting some months for the renewal; I had even arranged with a friend who is an RFD that he could if needed hold my guns for me.

The day before my certificate was due to run out (8 working days after I had completed my renewal paperwork) I had a phone call from the FEO (I expected him to complain about how late I had left it, and it was my fault if there was a delay) but he was genuinely helpful and just wanted to check a couple of things. He informed me that he did not feel a visit was needed for my renewal this time and he would get my new certificates out to me. 18 hours later they landed on my doormat. I can not praise the licensing team highly enough turning around my renewal so quickly.

Postscript: as I wrote this, I was looking through my emails etc to get the chronology of this post correct, and for the first time I have actually had a good look at the medical certificate. What stood out to me was the date is was signed. I originally ordered the certificate on the 28th November and finally received it on the 13th February, the certificate was signed by the Doctor on the 26th December, so where had this certificate sat for 7 weeks and why did I have to chase so many times? I will be following this up with Medcert to understand the delay.

Interesting, I'm an RFD in Gloucestershire and had/have similar experiences - I'll come back and complete my experiences as they remain ongoing. I have my RFD renewed, but No Medcert, I was letting it simmer along to get to the end before (if at all) commenting, this thread however popped up

One thing is foreshore - the current system doesn't work, and being someone that has been successful in industry I can't understand why...

I used Shootcert, very efficient same day service.
how can day do same day service ? must take longer than that to get all your medical records from your GP.

Notice they are also £75 plus vat so £90 nearly the £100 my GP charge me a couple of years back, but hearing rumours that my GP may no longer be continuing to complete the report.

My GP refused to complete the report. After a lot of problems and delays I got them to issue my records direct to Shootcert who turned the enquiry around same day. Although they knew I was desperate for the report!

My experience still continues, and the final write-up to come...
it's the 8th of March today, and my rfd certificate is up on the 11th

I received an email yesterday from MedCert
Your report is now complete and on its way to you via email.
We're keeping the hard copy on file and if you would like this posted out to you, or if you require another digital copy at any time, please contact us.
MedCert have had my docs since 10th Feb and engaged on the 6th Dec 2022.
There are no attachments to MedCerts last email so I wait

This is not a problem as good ole Gloucestershire has already issued my full renewal over a week or so ago (well in fact I have two, I'll add that to the final write-up)

Interestingly Glos will not accept a doctors certificate that is more than three months old. With having to have your application in at least eight weeks prior to expiry this leaves a very narrow time frame to work in.

is that 3 months at time of submission or at time of renewal?

I am glad to see good reports on Glos Pol as i have not always had good things to say about how they make up their own ideas of what the law/guidance is.

My better half has her sgc renewal in now. Our doc has 2 practices working out of one surgery. the practice to the left £60 and 1 week to get cert the one to the right will not do them at all!

my coterminous is due next year

Sometimes that's good, sometimes it's bad. They can be fun at times though, or infuriating - depends whether you enjoy the challenge! I miss Les Spice, I got on well with him. I try to deal with Mark Palmer now - from what I hear he's like Marmite, but in my personal experience he'll put a lot of time in if you show him a little respect and I like him. It's not the office staff that are the problem in Glos, it's the people further up the tree.

3 months at time of submission or 3 months at time of renewal. Very good question, I’ll endeavour to find out.

And in answer to the above question.

“Your GP letter need to be within 3 months from receipt of your renewal application”.

Glos have been extremely quick in answering this query 👍

No GP surgery near me (Glos) will agree to provide the medical certificate. Many, apparently, are part of an association of GPs who meet periodically and most in my neck of the woods have a mutual agreement to refuse anyone going direct for a certificate. I spoke with Glos not so long ago as mine is up for renewal in a year and Mark was very helpful as was Steve. They've been spot on this past few years to deal with and seem to have been very supportive despite the experience of getting a medical certificate like pulling teeth. I have no doubt I'll have to go down the Medicert or Shooter cert route when the time comes but have been warned not to apply before three months of the certificate renewal date.

Les and I had a couple of discussions re law... he did not really appreciate that i would quote act/section when required seeing as i am ex job but another force.... (and always looked stuff up before phoning and had a crib sheet )

Yeah, that was how he worked. The year before he retired he called me a couple of times for advice on applications - I'd grilled him that many times that I think he figured out that having me on side could actually help him too.

I used Shotgun Medicals http://www.shotgunmedicals.com took just 3 days to sort my medical certificate, cost me £50 down from £60 as I'm a BASC member.

Thames Valley still haven't sent though my renewed certificates even though I applied in October 2022, they expired on the 12th February so TVP had to give me an 8 week extension, I've had my FEO visit etc.

Just had a 1 for 1 variation in less than a week, brilliant service.

Renewal on the horizon let’s hope the service is as slick.
Applied for medical cert at GP’s, £45, which I thought was more than reasonable, no idea of time scales though.

Out if interest i wonder at what point of a new fac application the medical details are requested by the officer dealing with an applicant . Could be random of course but i would reckon is must be at a certain point of the application this takes place. A far cry from when i applied for my .22 back in the 80's!!

Prior to us having to provide the medical certificate, my gp records flagged that I held firearms within 4 weeks of sending my first application... due to covid it took another 9 months until my certificate arrived.
