Good bullet for a 30.06?

165gn cup-and-core 56-58gns H4350 If it dosen't shoot this well you don't need a gunsmith you need an exorsist! I use the Balistic TIP

165gn nosler BT over 56gn of H4350 is all i use now, shot lovely out of my old sako and when i got a new blaser just adjusted the bullet seating depth on all my loaded rounds and one holers, minimal meat damage and don't get many runners.

my Blaser also likes 165grn Sierra game king with H4350 also just tried out some Ramshot big game only shot paper with the ramhot but initial results look good

that's why the 180g'ers are perfect in the aught six, downs a stag with authority and still slow enough for smaller deer species..in fact, less damage than a fast .243!

thats the winning post, although i use a 308 and not a 3006 mike norris advised me to try the 180 sierra spbt and they are the mustard they bowl fallow over with authiory

My favourite load:
Hornady 180gr Interbond #30709, IMR 4350 52.5gr, 2600fps (calculated)
Note: the above load uses IMR 4350 which isn't the same as H4350
I've used the 180gr on red stags, kudu, warthog, gemsbok etc and it works fine.

My second favourite load:
Nosler 165gr Ballistic Tip #39584, N160 58.5gr, 2725fps (measured)
I've used the 165gr on roe, red hinds and so on. It works fine.

Although I have a box of the 165gr loads remaining, my standard load is now the Hornady 180gr Interbond. I can't see any point in shooting light bullets from .30-06. If I wanted to shoot 120gr bullets at high velocity, I'd have bought a .257 Roberts or a .25-06 (to name but two).

There are very few bad bullets made in the 30 cal, the 30.06, 308, .300 mag etc have been around for so long and are so popular that the makers have pretty much got their main product lines sorted. As long as you match bullet speed to the proscribed limits for a given bullet they all work very well, especially if you only will shoot UK species.

Personally I agree with the comments about getting a good load going with a 180 grain bullet of your choice and using it for everything. The same bullet can loaded to around 2600-2700 without too much effort and is pretty much as flat shooting as the 150 grain load out to 250-300 yards or so.

With respect to backstop, there is not a backstop in my view that can be considered 100% for a 150 grain bullet but iffy for a bullet weighing only 30 grains more. In my view a backstop is a backstop, I don't see this as an issue.

I use a Horandy 180 grain interlock BTSP over reloader 17. The velocity of this load is about 2650fps, loaded down slightly from max for reliability, and has been tested so far on everything from African ground squirrels to Moose and everything in between, it has been utterly reliable.

For best i do load up 200 grain Nosler Accubonds, 168 grain Barnes TSX and 180 Nosler Paritions but to be honest in the UK and most other places one simply does not need the extra penetration capability of these bullets in the 30.06.
