Good buys - Bad buys and some the jury is still out on!

Hi All,

My missus will tell you that I am an impulse buyer of the worst kind, and I am, I admit it. I buy things I 'need' and at the time, cant live without, of course most of the things I buy are either not suitable in some way, or they turn out not to be as expected, its a real pain. I remember one day three pairs of golf shoes mysteriously arriving, I hadn't got a clue where from at the time, but it turned out I had been giving the Famous Grouse a tanning one night and bought them all on Ebay, I gave one pair away and the two remaining pairs are still in the cupboard, none of them fitted me...don't drink and Ebay.

So, it has been with shooting, I have lost count of the thousands I have spent on guns and equipment over 50 years, its been a costly business, but I thought I would list what have been my recent good and bad buys of late and maybe others could share their stories?

Good:

  1. Swazi Tahr, absolutely brilliant, I have yet to be either cold or wet in this smock, worth every penny, I got talked into it by Roger at Swillington and don't regret it one bit. Dont need too much underneath, a base-layer and micro-fleece is all.
  2. Ridgeline Monsoon as backup smock to Swazi, not as bad as some people make out, comfortable, warm and dry, can get sweaty if yomping though.
  3. Lowa Hunter GTX Evo Extreme Boots, the best things since sliced bread, stiff at first, but now eased off, amazingly waterproof, I would not be without them and want another pair for backup.
  4. Mora knives, I have several (quelle surprise) brilliant value for money and as good as knives costing ten times as much.
  5. Swarovski Z6i 2-12x50 the best and most expensive scope I have ever bought, I love it.
  6. Hawke Frontier ED 8x40 Binoculars, I was looking to get some s/h Leica's or Swaro's and got these to 'tide me over', however, I have never felt the need to replace them, bright and clear, easy to use, fantastic value for money.
  7. To be continued...

Bad:
  1. Sealskinz shooting gloves, good for cold dry weather, worse than useless in wet, last trip out the leather palms were completely soaked, weighed a ton and pulled inside out when I took them off, a total waste of £47.00. I do like the fold-back magnetised trigger finger though...
  2. Harris Bipods, I have two, 9-13 and 12-27, I'm not saying they are bad quality, indeed they are really well made, but for me they just add weight and dig in my back when walking, I know they are very popular and are ok for the range, but I shoot perfectly well off my pack or off sticks, so they will be going soon.
  3. To be continued...

Regards,
Al

on a serious note:

GOOD
Viper-flex sticks, blooming awesome, well worth the money
Sauer 202 rifle, never let me down

BAD
Viper-flex Go-Lo kit, have persevered with two sets as the first I assumed were just a Friday afternoon job. The second set I actually was so incensed with I threw them in the bin.

Harkila boots. never again.

Good

1. Minox binos for £125 as a starting set, compared them to many more expensive brands and other than the fact I would like range finding, do not find that I was any more impressed with the Big brands I have compared them to

2. Monkey sticks (the £16 DIY quad sticks) so stable, great for using as a walking aid and crossing barbed wire fences

3. Decathlon bum bag for carrying all of my stalking bits I like to take while walking round (and inevitably the extra few things, you know, just in case)

Bad

1. .17HMR, what a *****ing waste of time that was. Loved the performance when it was working well but plagued with issues. Split cases that were causing accuracy loss (opened up to 4"groups at 100 from circa 1 to 1.5") price sky rocketed and went up 50 percent in just over a year I had it.

BAD: Any car made by British Leyland!

BAD: Webley Patriot .22" FAC air rifle! Good God! Firing it was like being smacked in the face and it shot all of a three inch group at twenty-five yards. Utter rubbish

BAD: Monkey Loader shotgun cartridge loading device (not me...I saw a fellow gun using one...I showed that Robert Churchill's pocket loading technique was quicker and he was miffed he had wasted sixty quid plus on a mere gimmick)!

GOOD: RCBS Rockchucker. Stood me good from 1976 when I bought it new until 2012 when I sold it on.

I've made some appalling purchases in the past - I can't even blame it on the drink at the time

On one occasion I bought 4 e type V12s and a datona from US for re-import into the UK in some half baked 'get rich scheme'

Coincided with the 1990 crash

cost me my house

When stupidity and greed get together - the most common result is tears .....

Good:
1) B&Q garden cane shooting sticks.
2) German army surplus flecktarn jacket (with surplus goretex under it when its wet)
3) Deerhunter Ram troosers/ Rovince troosers
4) Vortex Razor bins
5) 7x57 - chuffin love that calibre

Bad:
1) Cheap first pair of bins. Should have saved up or spent money on better 2nd hand
2) Waxed cotton baseball cap for stalking. Sweaty as a nun at a Chippendale show and brown colour bled onto my head - mrs thought I'd had hair dye....

Ugly:
1) KKC stock. Nowt wrong with the stock, the ugly part is my attempt with a dremel to make it fit a Varberger action......:D

Good:
- Aeropress coffee squeezer thing. Tiny amount of additional fiddle for truly delicious coffee. To be taken when contemplating loading tables
- £8 neoprene comb raiser. Immediate improvement in shot placement consistency. Zombie apocalypse bandolier attachment optional.
- Teko wool/poly blend walking socks. Wool - so they wick sweat when walking and stay warm, with poly so they don't disintegrate after three washes. And those Corrymoor ones which are all wool but so overbuilt that they last forever
- Semi-auto shotguns - cheap, less kick, adjustable stocks, pointable

Bad
- O2 coverage
- 22LR Winchester 'subs'. More supersonic cracks from these than Concorde
