Good munty buck but in velvet.

Early start this morning rewarded with two Munty bucks, breaking a short run a blank outings.

Bigger of the two looks a decent head but still in velvet.

I think I am reasonably competent re head prep but have not done one in velvet.

If its worth it , tips please on getting a result worthy of the wall.

Shot 3 last week including a doe as if you wait then that is as good as a miss...
Lots around to shoot and they eat no different with a set out of velvet.

Is it worth trying to make something of the head ? ie boiling out and mounting.

If the antler is soft it's not worth doing anything with it.

Hard to say because they're born at all times of the year and are therefore growing antlers at all times of the year. They are however, all trying to get into sink with being in hard antler by September. As a rule, they're casting from March through to July and therefore, one that cast in March will likely be in hard antler by late June. One that didn't cast until June will not be in hard antler until September. You're unlikey to see any muntjac buck with their second heads being in velvet from October-February. March is an early casting too.

End Result not too bad , can you get a medal for one stripped out of its velvet ?

you can do it yourself.
I've recently measured 2 heads.
Both were gold .

Buck in picture isn’t worth preparing. It’s in velvet , and albeit small ,will be soft.
Bucks do not grow all year.
May to September they are in velvet.
Shot hundreds over the last 50 years in Bedfordshire and never found one in velvet in march.

Good point.

I dont know the answer, which is why I started the thread.

I suspect CIC would turn a nose up at artificial colour, BASC probably not.

If the point of measuring and recording is to build up a picture of deer populations and health then one as mine should not be an issue.
Thats probably just opened up a giant rabbit hole.

Mine is on the wall and I am happy with it. My local BASC chap is always happy to do an official measure for me and I will update when done.

I have done my own BASC measure on it and get 61 points which is gold

Incorrect. There is no colour score for a muntjac. Even for roe you can they just score zero for colour.

No issues with the CIC Scoring artificially coloured Muntjac, I've submitted several that have been.
