Well got my FAC and shotgun cert today.
Let the spending begin
When I first got my FAC, I bought what I soon found out to be, was a load of old second hand rubbish.
I would recommend to talk to people and then buy the best and buy once. It will turn out cheaper in the long run.

Yes, do be choosy and take your time. Not only for your rifles but any shotguns you might want too. Obviously you'll have an idea what rifle(s) you want Calibre-wise. But consider the use you will put them to. Will you do a lot of walking with it, for example and the odd shot? If so, don't get a heav barrelled rifle. What ranges will you be shooting at? Will the range vary a lot or is a fixed scope a better bet? As for shotguns, also consider your use. No good having a semi if you intend game shooting. Or a heavy gun with a long barrel or rough shooting, but that might suit you for clay busting. Maybe a nice spotter that. Would do everything would be a goo first buy, then you can concentrate on rifles.

Simply because many organised shoots won't allow you to shoot with one, as I suspect you might be aware. The reasoning behind it being, if buying one shotgun at least to start with, then get one which doesn't limit your possibilities.
Put it this way, I was knackered last night after spending Sat and some of Sunday picking up guns, a 6.5x55, a 22lr, and a .17 hmr. I'd already researched while waiting for the brown envelope (since October), so planning phase had already been done. I'm a happy bunny (but the real ones aint going to like .22lr and possibly .17 hmr. Thanks for all of the replies.
Nowt wrong with small calibres, bish. They have their uses where bigger calibres would be useless and are much cheaper to feed (although saying that, the temptation is to feed them much more). So enjoy. There's no doubt a quite a few .22lr and .17hmr fans on here. Although the .17hmr tends to win as many admirers as detractors due to it's ammunition issues.
I couldn't be happier with my .22 CZ452, very accurate, £150 including scope and moderator (both pretty low quality) and prefers cheap CCI subsonics; and AYA No4 for £475. Both in very good nick. Unimaginative choices but can't go far wrong with those - leaves substantially more cash for the centrefire and scope.
My exact deal Apthorpe. Previous owner used CCI subs as he said it preferred them. Same price, but no mod. Love it.

I knew exactly what i wanted when i got my first FAC, received FAC on Saturday, on the Blower on Monday to F.A.Anderson, S&W 686 ordered FAC sent off, postie delivered gun and FAC next Saturday, thats how it was done in 1984 and we were safer then, then what we are now.
