Gralloch

Due to forgetfulness, I did one gralloch suspended from a Defender roof rack with an Opinel. My mate had never seen a gralloch befo
(I recall a very cunning Irish chap, can't remember his name).

I don't know if you are thinking of Fieldsports Ireland and Jason Doyle (who is on here). He did a very good video on gralloching and I try to use his method in the field. I try to get the whole intestinal tract out in one piece, as a kind of little challenge to myself.
Jason is exactly the man. I need to check his video again, as I try to take the whole tract out too.

they love it, also I have always be wary about bones for the dogs, but andy DS 308 sent a few pictures through so know they have them also Chips @ 7 his teeth are like a bay watch actors nashers know.
That's where I went wrong then Tim, most of my teeth are plastic, must be the liver.😆

more likely to be David Dunne - he has put up some great instructional videos

Just putting it out there , been stalking a couple of times and been successful, having watched guide do gralloch think it is now time for me to do gralloch . Anyone out there willing to let me help doing gralloch on maybe a cull day ! Based on Leicestershire/ Warwickshire border but willing to travel for the experience. Any replies would be great.
Funnily enough, any stalker I've been out with has been more than happy to go through the gralloch with me on the hill, they're usually more than happy to show me the ropes if they think you're interested. That might be easier on the reds where it's usually a bit more relaxed after the shot, but most stalkers would be happy to guide you if they have time and there is still light.

Sign yourself up with Jelen Wildlife. You will, for a price, get to go on a cull day, gralloch and get instruction. There are other providers available, but Jelen run these days quite regularly, and you obviously want to get something booked in.

Gone are the days of the NSCC, when you used to get a deer or two each to hone your skills...............:old::old:

most of the youtube ones that i have seen are just people showing of how quick they are. not much use to learn from.

Corinium rifle range used to offer this as they sent me invites after my DSC, basically a day on a park cull not always with shooting, but to help process the beasts. For me it was too costly in that I had access to my own deer and own ground to get experience on, plus a very experience shooting buddy for advice on abnormalities, but if I did not then it would have been worthwhile.

Might be worth giving Paul a shout to see if they are still doing it Corinium Rifle Range he was on here but don't know if he still is

Hi Fishcake,

I have 3 instructional dvds on gralloching and carcass inspection if you would find them useful.

1) Gralloching from Field to Larder - British Deer Society
2) Deer Carcass Preparation & Examination for DMQ Level 2 - David Stretton
3) Gralloching & Lardering for DMQ Level 2

Just send me your address by PM and I will post them off to you.

A mate had a guy out after a roe doe his third stalk good shot no problems he asked if he could do the gralloch and as my mate was in need of some personal time he agreed when he emerged from the undergrowth his client had the spleen in his hand with a big grin on his face thinking it was the liver for his breakfast dont know who was the most gutted him or the deer.

Before i ever did a real gralloch i watched youtube videos for a good while, they really helped! I'm still not particulaly proficient but i can get the job done.

Thanks everyone for advice will take it all on board. Not too sure about it being same as rabbit but get your drift 👍👌.

Well the general principals are the same regardless of species, I think that’s all tim is getting at, and as most of us started with bunnies learning to remove everything cleanly was taught from the get go..... split the green on a rabbit and you know about it, just as messy just smaller proportions. There’s no dark art to deer, people get scared because the consequences of messing it up are a bit bigger, but in so many ways it’s easier the bigger they are, more room to get your hands in and manipulate things. Time and exposure to it (good and bad) will all be part of the education. I’m sure most on here will at some point have had an explosive face full of green when they’ve been a bit hasty with the knife, but you learn and adapt the method over time. As I say, it’s not rocket science just patience really.

Just watch some of the videos on YouTube. Watch them several times so that you remember the process. It won't be as good as having someone there to guide you through it but the only way to get good at it is to get practice.
