Wanted: Grayling fishing .

I'm looking for recommendations for the best rivers for a chance at grayling preferably in the south of England. My son is 21 this year and a keen sea trout fisherman and I would like to organise him a few days for grayling later in the year

I'm not a fisherman myself (and that'll show in the quality of this post) but when I lived in Christchurch (Dorset) I'm pretty sure that there were folk fishing for Grayling on either or both the Stour and the Avon. Not sure where my memory dragged this up from but hopefully it might help.

If you fancy a trek up to North Wales then the Welsh Dee has more fish per sqmeter than any other river in the UK. Llangollen angling would be a good start. It's where the European Hanak Grayling Competition is held every year. Plenty if wild mountain lochs and small rivers for a seat trout as well.

I think the record Grayling came from the river Frome.

There is a free stretch of the river Frome at the end of Lubbecke way in Dorchester, I believe.

There used to be plenty of grayling in the Windrush, Colne and other fast flowing rivers when I lived down in Oxfordshire last century.

Up here in Edinburgh there were plenty in all the local rivers. I caught a 2lb grayling under the Dean Bridge on the Water of Leith in about 2002.

Given the amount of shite that all the water companies spew into the rivers all the Grayling will be gone.

I walked along the banks of the Windrush in Burford last year - now green weed, no gravel, just brown sludge.

Up here same in all the rivers.

You will only now find Grayling and wild trout on rivers above any form of habitation and above any form of drain or sewerage outlets. And also above chicken farms etc.

You won’t beat the Welsh Dee for Grayling, day tickets can be bought from the tackle shop in Bala.
