Greatwall steed

The lads who used to come up to service our estate radios bought 3 when they were being pushed at every country fair. They regretted it greatly. They were not great , in fact they sold them on pretty quick.
Not sure if there is a dealer network anymore either.

Had a Tata pickup worked great but sourcing parts was a PIA as the garages demanded I found them for them. Now only mainstream makes for me I cant be arse d with that anymore.

Historically there has always been an issue with products supplied from China.…… Spares. They were always set up for production but the backup was rubbish. I’m sure over time they will get better and be viable as more European companies get involved with them.
There is however some thought that China has had its day.……. When the great excedus of production moved over there the locals were riding bicycles and walking and getting by on rice and sod all money. Now they all have cars, traffic jams and want decent wages so manufacturing costs have gone up and now people are bringing back manufacturing, especially in light of the fact that we couldn’t get anything and a box of nitrile gloves went from £3.50 went up to about £16 at the worst. So how China will fare over the next 10 years will be interesting.
Anyhow, I am waffling. She has covid, I have the lurgie, I tried to break one of my fingers today and haven’t been out since before Chrismas. Sigh.

To be fair i ran 1 for 3 or 4 years, can't really fualt it. Done quite a bit of mway work travelling right down to south of eng a few times and down to grouse in yorks/northumbria plenty. I might of put 30-40k miles on it mibbee even more
I actually quite liked it, comfy to drive but i will say i'm not over fussy with motors for work
Really didn't owe me anthing

Was an insurance write of so very cheap and quite badly damaged althou just body work. I fixed it up myself althou not to a massively high standard, but useable.

Can't remembr it ever really letting me down, i thought not bad to drive, not a massive amount of power for trailer work.
Had heated front seats which were quite nice.

Would i have another 1?? Probably no unless very cheap, but thats more due to the towing ability. They must be getting on a bit now mostly 10-15 type plates.
If it looks tidy and money is a lot cheaper than a similar aged L200, go have a look, have a look at spares 1st, crawl about look at the chasis giving it a good poke. I have seen other pick up brands with far worse corosion/rust issues than that GW, infact my current L200 is far worse than the GW and about same age, but it spent most of it live on the A9 before i got it, so on heavily gritted roads a lot of its life.
Like any 2nd hand motor check the MOT history see wot its needed each year, sometimes can give u a clue to how its been driven
I think 1 problem them can be bad for is finding reverse, i think the magnet? thingy on the gearstick can be funny at times.

If it was only for me running about with no trailer i probably would have another 1, but it would have to be very tidy and low miles and cheap as u wont get much resale value out of it, which isnae a problem if u bought it cheap

As for rot never had any issues and think mine was abused a bit before i got mine ( guesing a keeper or farm truck, watery mud splashes all throu engine bay as if flying throu muddy gates/puddles too fast, which i think they slid into to do the damage, plus a load of empty 17hmr cases scattered about inside.

There is/was a garage in Ayr i got any spares from i needed, there is also a great wall garage in coldstream, never really had any problem with spares, althou it didn't need much that i can remember. 2 2nd hand driveshafts when i very 1st got it which weren't dear, guessing sat about for a bit aftr being smashed?
i did find odd 1's getting split for spares too in online scrappies

I bought 1 new , only problem I ever had it went into limp mode couple of times other than that served me until it was written off in accident .
You may find parts hard to get now .

My mate has a 12 plate, he‘s had it around 5yrs, it was cheap but it’s been reliable and surprisingly good on fuel, he hammers it everywhere but it’s now starting to fall to bits unfortunately.

have a read here.

But to be fair Mitsi stopped importing L200's a while back and still a big demand for them.

I'd speak to the garages that did sell great walls 1st and see wot they say for spares,.
I know the wee garage i use would mump and moan odd times as likes of euro parts or dingbro might not stock a part, but i just phoned up the great wall garage in Ayr and most times was delivered within 2 days, so can't really fault them for parts
I know the steeds have not been imported for7? yars or so but u could still buy other great wall motors.

Like i said if very cheap and in good nick, low miles ( if i wasnae needing the towing) i would have another, althou i wouldnae go out specifically looking for 1.
Definately better pick ups out there but with older 2nd hand motors and esp pick ups/work vehicles a lot depends on the indvidual motor, has it been used as a chelsea tractor or abused over rough ground towing trailers all the time.

Must admit i find almost all the older 4x4's ( up to 14 plates or so) to get pretty much the same mpg anyway, doesnae matter wether a jimny, sportrak, fourtrak, nivara or numerous l200's ur never that far of 30 ish mpg.
And even the new modern add blue BS pick ups arenae really doing all that much better
