GRS laminate stock splitting

Evening all. Mate sent me these pics this evening after noticing the stock has a really bad split down it.

He’s been stalking with it for a couple of years now on his sako 6.5 swede. Never recalls having dropped it or anything like that.

Anyone else experienced anything like this with GRS?

i would say the rifle has been dropped on the rear of the stock. but i am not grs and as they warrant their stocks for five years ,tell your friend to contact them directly and explain his issue. they are good people to deal with and may replace or repair the stock but if they find external damage you will be out of luck. perhaps post pictures of the butt stock and butt plate

I wonder did it split from recoil because it was a poor fit to the action.
My mate bought a boyds laminate stock for his sako 85 , fitted it and his first shot broke the 2 action screws.
He got new screws and had it bedded and it was fine .
Best to contact GRS.

I did ask him about action screw torque but he did say he has a torque driver so can’t over do it.

The but stock is rubber and isn’t damaged or deformed.

I passed on the advice for him to send the pictures direct to GRS. They’ll likely have a pretty good idea straight away.

Would be interested to know if this has happened to anyone else when they weren’t able to explain why.

I could understand if a laminate stock were to delaminate, but for it to break as shown must have taken considerable force, I should think 🤔
Looking at the way it appears splintered or crumbled around the split (particularly at the rear) makes one wonder if there was an underlying manufacturing fault?

Laminate stock, so the split shouldn’t transfer between layers.
A photo and a mail to the manufacturer would be a good start to a resolution.

It's not plywood though.

Laminate stocks can be quite fragile, as all the grain runs in the same direction, as that is more aesthetically pleasing. When you see a stock made from plywood it is obvious that the grains alternate, but it looks horrid in comparison.

Quite a few air rifle laminate stocks have been known to go, especially through the pistol grip area, as it suffers from quite a bit of leverage.

I'm not against laminates though, and I even have a GRS for an Air Arms action.

Are you sure this is legit? - that doesn’t look like any Sako rifle I’m familiar with…

Has it be slung; it’s possible to break a stock by stressing it whilst it’s slung over the shoulder.

Exactly the same thing happened to mine with a hunter light in a my CZ 550 .243. A couple of shots and it split in the exact same place. Sent a couple of pictures and returned the stock. It was replaced and I was back up and running with a week or so.
No quibbles and an absolute outstanding service from all involved.😎👍

Sorry about the rifle type error and very good spot. This is his Howa Varmint in 22-250. Tired when I posted. He does also have a Sako in 6.5 though!

And yes certainly slung. He covers a lot of miles on foot with this rifle!

I had my sling break and the rifle fell butt first and sheared straight through the same area

Confusing pictures! Crack appears to be higher on one side, need one taken from rear. Definitely at weaked place, I would say.
The second picture in @agent 's post suggests similar.

I made a laminate ‘TRG’ stock for my Tikka CTR a few years ago and ended up dropping it off the bench which caused a very similar split;
