Guns in cabinets - muzzle up or muzzle down?

I extend the legs on the bipod on each rifle and it clears the crown by some distance, which allows them to be stored muzzle down without any risk of damage.

What is your reasoning? Surly cardboard will hold moisture? If you have any damp you are going to knacker your crown?

if I have moisture in the cabinet I have a bigger problem.

foam is worse in my opinion as it doesnt even have the wicking property of card. any contact with damp foam is like it sitting in a puddle.
if water was introduced the card will absorb (oil or water) throughout the material and dry out over time
it is also usually not dense enough and time and frequent compression of crowns, butts etc it degrades and crumbles.

You will always have moisture in you cabinet, even with modifiers camels, golden rods etc., the issue with cardboard is the adsorbancy. nothing to do with water but the fact it strips the oil from the steel of your muzzle. If you have rifles and guns that are not regularly shot or oiled you will get rest in the last inch of the bore A good foam non absorbent pad will not wick the oil from your rifle. I ruined a barrel like this some 20 years ago using a canvas pad. When living in western QLD (really low humidity) we used to have to put a piece of flannel in the end of the bore to stop the hornets nesting (mud) in them. had to be real careful about this creating a rust situation long term.
